The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Because Republicans ignoring pleas for racial justice is so ordinary as to not be news any more? As sad as it sounds, that seems to be the truth.

Essentially it's a variation on A Million Is a Statistic. One racist jackass Republican is newsworthy; hundreds of them is just "Bear shits in woods".

Combine that with a few statements like "it's always been that way" and appeals to voter apathy like "Even if you speak out, no one will listen to you" and you guarantee no progress.

Voter apathy is naturally going to hit the left harder because they're the ones who actually want to do anything. The right, often, are quite happy to fiddle while Rome burns and black kids get massacred.

Jesus Christ, even Fox is getting tired of Trump's supporters.

So apparently (unconfirmed news here), there's a group called "Women for Trump." They might as well call themselves "Women for Misogyny", because if you hate yourself that much...

But of course, Trump is just gonna smile and use this as proof that most Americans love him (if it's true).

They are not getting tired.

It's just that Rupert Murdoch reigned in Roger Ailes.

[up][up] While that Fox article couldn't help but take potshots at liberal media, I have to say that I agree with its core points.

At this point it looks to me like a (perfectly justified) swelling of anger at a system that seems designed to keep them down no matter who is in charge being taken out on the nearest target because they already know it won't do any good directed at Republicans.
I agree, except about the Republican part. I think it would do good to do this to Republican candidates - but I don't think the people protesting think it would do good.
I really think they were on somebodies payroll.
Honestly, I think Fighteer's idea is the more likely of the two. Much as I'm sure many people would love to blame this too on Republicans.
BLM has had quite a bit to say about O'Malley, Jeb Bush, Trump, Cruz and Jim Webb.
Republicans ignoring pleas for racial justice is so ordinary as to not be news any more?

Re: the Fox debate - What's wrong with the questions they asked? Isn't the point of the debates to ask candidates hard questions and make them answer? Whether or not I like the candidates, or the moderators, I can hardly fault them for asking tough questions.

Well, they opened up with the question "So hey guys, is anyone here NOT willing to completely support the eventual nominee?" and then Trump raised his hand.

Funny stuff. Trump party go!

Trumps definition of a question that is inappropriate to ever ask anyone is exactly the same as his definition of a question whose answer might make him look bad or which he doesn't want to give.

The same questions posed to his opposition he'd have no issue with.

I was plesantly surprised by the Fox debate. I can only hope they stay the course and not become marshmellows next go around.

I half expected that at least two out of all the candidates would end up shirtless and flinging poop at the rest.

This is why I do not bet.

I dunno; a lot of the stuff I've seen claiming that pegs them as Clinton stooges.

The two being such far right loonies makes me doubt they were sincere in their criticism of Bernie and Democrats in general.

Totally justified criticism mind you but I'm willing to bet they had ulterior motives. Whether being paid was one of them I cannot say.

Oh really when?

I dunno, it's certainly possible to be a strong opponent of institutional racism while being otherwise socially and/or economically conservative.

I hope they aren't Clinton supporters concern trolling Sanders' campaign. That would be disgusting.

The ones in Seattle seem to just be fringe activists. One was photographed with a T-shirt about "drinking white tears," which is a popular check-your-privelege style phrase on places like tumblr.

Has it been confirmed whether or not Sanders was going to have a BLM speaker at that particular rally?

We could also talk about he later had a 15000 person rally.

Not really, since Obama had a lot of hype which started four years previously, while Sanders has always been a fringe figure in the party. It'll be harder for him to break through.

"Revealed", not "reviled". And yes, that is a bad day. Their attack on Sanders' rally was unconscionable given that he might well be their only viable ally.

[up] Sorry. I wouldn't call it unconscionable, that's reserved for things like murder or scientifically experimenting on human beings. I'd call it dam stupid, and seeing as the has tag for this even was apparently Bow Down Bernie, it looks like this particular faction has gone mad with, perceived, power.

Again, Sanders looks like a great candidate, but he's not The One.

Okay, not unconscionable, but deeply stupid. The country will not get behind that movement if they want an absolute solution to racial power inequity and will accept nothing less, NOW. I know it sounds terrible, and yes, I agree with their purpose, but to sabotage the campaign of the candidate most likely to support them? Come on!

"Bow Down Bernie"?
