Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

(Bernie Sander's National Press Secretary) Symone D Sanders Speaks at Bernie Rally Seattle 8/8/15

We learn from history that we do not learn from historyWhile I'm afraid that I already know how this statement will be taken, and I fully recognize that I'm typing it as a beneficiary of white male privilege, I strongly believe that directing the #BlackLivesMatter campaign at Bernie Sanders is a case of throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Its proponents are suffering from a pernicious case of the Perfect Solution Fallacy, almost deliberately overlooking the many ways in which Sanders' proposals would benefit them, both directly and indirectly.
It seems that they won't be satisfied unless a candidate arises who promises to... quite frankly I'm not sure what they want, because Sanders has talked about police reform among other things. They can't keep Obama, and it's not like his record on race relations is anywhere near what they want either.
At this point it looks to me like a (perfectly justified) swelling of anger at a system that seems designed to keep them down no matter who is in charge being taken out on the nearest target because they already know it won't do any good directed at Republicans. It's like rioters who wreck their own hometowns. It feeds into the opposition's narrative and directly sabotages whatever chances they might have of electing authorities who genuinely sympathize with them.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"It has come to light recently that the two people who interrupted Bernie have past ties to far right groups and radical Christians. They were big supporters of Palin and wanted to get rid of Planned Parenthood because they were killing black children or something to that effect.
Gotta be honest, I really think they were on somebodies payroll.
Oh really when?False-flag plants? Oooh, that's nasty. Is there any evidence?

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"None really but their past political history shows they're not exactly liberal or the most sane of people.
The payroll thing is pretty much rumor but I wouldn't be too surprised if it was true.
Either way these two didn't have the best of intentions.
You're totally right about the left and Democrats not doing enough for race though.

Oh really when?At worst it's someone paying them to sabotage Sanders, at best it's extremists co-opting a movement. Wonderful.

We learn from history that we do not learn from historyTo be honest, I was thinking something like that as soon as I heard about the issue, but I didn't want to suggest it because, let's be frank, it makes us look like paranoid rightwingers true believering it up.
But I guess it's not paranoia if they're really out to get you? Supposed racial activists targeting what is probably the most black-friendly candidate for protest and ignoring all the others is just utterly self-destructive.
Furthermore, I think Guantanamo must be destroyed.![]()
Not for the first part, but at least one of the women seems to be affiliated with an extremist group. I linked some articles in the Racism thread
.
The other candidates.
Are. Not. Being. Ignored.
I'd offer more links, but black people are social media haven't gathered a lot of cohesive articles on the matter. Those that have written on the matter are harder to find than larger media outlets. But I assure you, BLM has had quite a bit to say about O'Malley, Jeb Bush, Trump, Cruz and Jim Webb. You just have to look and listen.

Because Republicans ignoring pleas for racial justice is so ordinary as to not be news any more? As sad as it sounds, that seems to be the truth.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"For roughly the same reason people keep insisting that Muslims don't sufficiently speak out against Islamic terrorism?
This NPR article
is a good start.

Alright, so 'ignoring' wasn't quite the right word, but I'm really not seeing the evidence that other politicians are getting their campaign activities directly disrupted by activists. Criticizing from a distance really doesn't hold the same weight.
Furthermore, I think Guantanamo must be destroyed. All the Democratic candidates seem to have adjusted their platforms to incorporate those complaints, so I think that proclamations of doom are a little overblown. I mean, at least they are willing to do so.
The biggest risk is that black Democrats stay home, not that they suddenly vote Republican.

Did you ever consider the possibility it might be a lack of capability and not a lack of willpower? Does our nation have the best track record when it comes to hearing out minorities and other marginalized groups?
Many BLM activists have suggested that HRC hasn't been scrutinized in public speeches as much because she has much more beefed up security than the other candidates.
Also, I already said you can search for the criticism yourself. Not hard.

Here's the thing: we live in a day and age where the Overton window places direct political action of the sort that the BLM activists want at an unreachable distance. So it's either tear the country apart over it or go with a slow and steady approach, but the slow and steady approach means that more black people will inevitably die at the hands of cops before some measure of equity is achieved.
I don't have a good answer to offer, here. The same things can be said of poverty, inadequate healthcare, and many other social ills that we face.

Again I'll refer you to see the race thread but I think that it's because nobody expects better of her. Clinton is already expected to be mediocre when it comes to black rights and that's been accepted and she will lose out on votes because of it, Sanders however has talked about hoe and change, he's claiming that he's different from the likes of Clinton and that he wants to help people, so he's going to be held to that standard.
