Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Assassinations in the US are usually done by lone nuts with guns. Sometimes they have a cause, Anarchist in the case of Mc Kinley, but in most cases they are just plain nuts. The guy who shot Reagan for example wanted the attention of some actress, who later turned out to be Lesbian. Though as I recall their is strong evidence the FBI had a hand in killing MLK,not sure what evidence, but a court apparently ordered someone to pay compensation to his family.
I Bring Doom, and a bit of gloom, but mostly gloom.... "who turned out to be a Lesbian"
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
Yeah, in addition, though I doubt the assassin cared about such things, the attempt led to an upswing of support for Reagan, though questions over Presidential succession did embarrass several officials. Also, in the ultimate tragedy for many of my left leaning friends, Reagan survived
Edit: Oh and the abundance of assassinations in early US history probably has something to do with the fact that until fairly recently the president had no dedicated security force, the Secret Service having been originally created to combat counter fitting.

Well Mc Kinley had been put into power by big money interests. However, form what I heard, he mostly did it to impress the other anarchists. Csolgosz would walk up to random anarchists and ask where the secret meeting were or which important figures they were going to kill, and generally act like such a characature that the other anarchists were convinced he was a spy and wouldn't let him join.

I Bring Doom,and a bit of gloom, but mostly gloom.Reminds me of James Brown's It's a Man's World
. "Men are awesome, but women are indispensable... to a man's worth, that is... and only as accompaniment."
There's also the question of Who Shot JFK?, where there's a lot of questions about whether someone put Oswald up to it. But yeah, outright political assassination doesn't happen in America, like, at all.
Wouldn't be the first time mentally disturbed, schizophrenic people are taken advantage of for the sake of a false flag operation. I'm looking at you, FBI.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Those aren't false flag operations as they never actually happens and were never planned to actually happen. They probably qualify as entrapment, but that's a different thing.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranWhat's the deal with Black Live Matters and Bernie Sanders.
They are starting to appear like a black supremacist movement.
We're talking about it over in the race thread, though I'd make the point that the movement is a massive thing that I believe lacks any real formal power structure (someone correct me if I'm wrong) so you can't relay say "they" so much as "people associated with it".
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranSanders is an economic determinist (much like me, actually) in that he sees economics as the driver of social mores, the root of everything good and bad about this country. To that end, he basically brushes the BLM activists aside by assuring them that his policies will left up black americans along with everyone else. This is well-intentioned, and probably quite true in the long run (though in the short run, since blackness and poverty are mutual in the minds of many, blacks will still get mistreated by cops and others until that stereotype fades), but it also comes off as very condescending to them, ivory tower elitism. One heckler at a Sanders event said "that won't stop cops from shooting us!" which is true, it doesn't address the problems black americans face in the short term, problems which are valid and could also be addressed.
Additionally, his campaign points to Bernie's activism in the 60s and 70s for civil rights as proof that he is an ally, which is true but also not in that an old ally who does nothing for you today is hardly worth much (although he is still progressive on race issues, he just doesn't see it as a personal focus any longer).
I think the Sander's problems is sheer lack of communication since his proposals involve the demilitarization of the police force, increasing accountability for wrongdoing cops, make a better trained and paid police force and give focus on community policing instead of the cops showing up just to patrol and arrest people.
He is also against the War on Drugs which does put a lot of black men on jail over little stuff.
These are things that disproportionately affect black people in the US, but it isn't something like an end game for racism but a gathering of politics that will improve the life of black and poor people alike and it will take time to implement if he gets elected.
Race issues is a hot topic in the US elections and I am assuming he is trying to avoid making it the pivot of his election.
Inter arma enim silent legesYears ago, I kept complaining why Obama and Clinton didn't just run together. Like just toss a coin to decide who would be president, vice-president.
I'm starting to feel similar with Hillary and Bernie.
Edit: Trump dropped a rank and Bernie's ahead of him again.

Not as simple as that. The Clintons own the party and she would have been Democrat Dick Cheney if VP and would have completely shunted the other guy aside if she were president. It's a no win for Obama/Sanders/Whoever.
Besides, this is her last chance. She wants to be president. If she can't manage it this time, she never will.
Also, Bernie and Hillary actually have firmly different policies about now.
I wonder why #Black Lives Matter people aren't trying to dump the same shit on Hillary, though. Are we seeing a We ARE Struggling Together on the left, where the new movement are targeting the guy who's closest to their position without firing the same crap at non-allies?

There's supposedly a curse that kills the president every twenty years. I'm pretty sure Reagan broke that streak. Bush also never had anything happen to him.
