The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Benefits are great. For workers.

So employers will do everything they can to make sure you don't get them. Like for example, only making you work 39 hours a week.

Oh really when?
Kostya (Unlucky Thirteen)
#97828: Aug 5th 2015 at 8:55:50 PM

Why don't we just force businesses to provide these benefits to everyone on their payroll?

Keybreak (Long Runner)

Cause they couldn't afford it?

...or could they.

In which case, why don't we. tongue

Because freedom and unregulated markets and communism and bullshit. Greedy bastards do everything they can to keep workers suppressed.

I'm talking about megacorps that definitely can afford it. We should still have government provided healthcare for everyone else.

[up][up]You know, one of these days, I should really read up on socialism. It at least sounds better than this capitalist BS we keep on putting up with all the time, and that includes employers holding back benefits that they shouldn't be holding back. (Oh, and Donald Trump. Can't forget him...)

Library won't give me benefits until I'm full-time. Which I can mostly understand...so I want full-time. If just for the benefits and the money and the chance at promotion, at the cost of free time and staying in this town even longer.

And I always read things about how Europe has it better than the U.S. in the way of government assistance. But U.S.ians are suspicious of big government and...why?

Is it something against change or secularism or what.

It is hundreds of years worth of cultural baggage and pretty heinous social engineering by rich people that I'm far too tired to go into at midnight.

A lot of our fears of big government have to do with the Red Scare and WWII. Big government is something used by oppressive regimes like the Soviets and Nazis. Americans also have a stupid amount of pride and are being brainwashed by big companies.

edit: The dumb part comes in when Republicans use big government for their advantage but refuse to acknowledge it as such.

I rather the government give healthcare to everyone.

Fuck leaving people to the whims of their employers when employers have already proven to be shady assholes.

So, I heard of a story of a group called "American Police Force" operating out of a small town hoping to find someone willing to operate their otherwise waste of a jail.

They thought the guy - Michael Hilton - seemed trustworthy.

Except his name wasn't Michael Hilton.

When scrutiny started on who exactly these people were and who Hilton was, a massive list of aliases came to light. As soon as people dug into who he was, Hilton vanished into the night. Leaving only a generously paid employee to deny all wrongdoing on his account.

His list of aliases sounds like a brainstorming session for the next James Bond villain, including among them Midrag Ilia Dokovitch. Which, to me, is a name a dying secret service agent would whisper to 007.

This story has been circulating a lot recently in the oddest places.

As for buying expensive shit, I don't really need to. As long as the parents don't mind me still living in this house...

Not everyone has the luxury of having parents willing/able to let them live with them.

[up]It's not genetic, but it's often taught by parents, unless they go too heavy-handedly to the point of repelling the child.

...Which is what "conservatives" are prone to do, so you're right anyway.

Apparently a recent study reckons that a gene variant can influence one's political leanings. Its effects are apparently more noticeable in women.

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiot

[up]This is the third time I see this same study on the news, it never ceases to amaze me how unwilling people are to admit that human biology still has a heavy influence in the human behaviour, after all just because we're highly evolved animals it doesn't mean we're free from nature's influence.

On a semi related note, there is even a genetic predisposition towards having a faith

[up]If genes can influence your chances of getting addicted, depressed, anxious, schizophrenic, optimistic, selfishness, altrusim, liking or disliking colours, scents and foods or even getting autistic tendencies expressed... why not other aspects of personality, preference and thought?

I don't find it at all weird that some of our thinking has hardwired biases.

[up][up]It is another case of a survival instinct hardwired in the human psyche that didn't catch up with human culture, as it is evolving faster than our biology can.

It may have been useful thousands of years ago, but its brings poor results in our modernity.

[down]It isn't absolute but hardwired tendencies increase the probability of certain behaviours and patterns happening among members of any population regardless of their background. It isn't deterministic directive that is bound to happen but it gets noticeable in large populations and it isn't something you can easily isolate, specially since like minded people tend to stick together and reinforce the behaviours influenced by genetic predisposition.

The problem isn't the genes, it is how people use the study of them.

My son is probably genetically predisposed to needing eye glasses as he ages considering both his parents and one grandparent on each side does as well. And because of this, there is no reason to panic, but he cant miss an annual eye exam since he is at greater risk.

The problem is when people take these markers and abuse them as absolutes.

My son's predisposition means nothing if he intentionally pokes himself in the eye. You did that to yourself little Odin wannabe.

Just like someone predisposed to addiction and stays away from drugs doesn't have that big of an issue. They controlled their environments to work with their biology for the better.

Before I learned that the GOP meant Grand Old Party, I honestly believed it meant something like Group of Old People, based on the age of the voters and politicians involved.

It seems my mistaken conclusion wasn't that off.

Older people tend to be more politically active in general, Democrat or Republican. They tend to have more money than young adults and more free time than middle aged people. That said, younger people tend to be more Democratic in general, but "lulz Republicans are all fossils" isn't really accurate.

I would like to believe baby boomers are dumber than the average human because of lead exposure and that the future generations will be smarter.
