Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Young people can't afford anything because wages in general are so low.
Young people shouldn't be looking for high paying careers that require degrees and shit. They should be working part time jobs and blowing all their paycheck on petty nonsense. Like shoes or food or whatever the kids are into these days.
Oh really when?@Gracon You for serious?
I read an article that the 40-hour-a-week idea of full-time employment was a crock because people barely do three hours of work on any given day or something.
People wake up, go to work, then come home and spend their money on fleeting luxuries that mostly serve just to give them a reason to wake up the next day.
That's just the modern routine apparently.
You gotta believe me when I scare you away, all that I wish for is that you would stayEh, yes and no.
People, young people especially, need more disposable income. They need to be out buying useless things for the sake of just buying useless things. But nobody has money for that.
That's why wages do need to be around $15 an hour. Imagine how much money business would make because people just have some spending money.
And that article is bullshit. I've worked 40 hour weeks at minimum wage dives, you do work every one of the those 40 hours and then some. It's hell and you get little to nothing to show for it.
People deserve to have useless frivolities and the ability to just go spend money and have fun.

Oh really when?I don't really think that kids NEED to buy their entertainment. I could get by on Youtube videos and free Internet games. :p
Also since I work at the library I can read all the books I want for free.
I could, but I still pay for some fun. If I can't find a way to get it free...
You gotta believe me when I scare you away, all that I wish for is that you would stayI recall reading an article that was basically chewing out Millenials for not getting married and buying expensive shit like cars and houses. Every time I see one of those I want to go "Hey, old people. Maybe we'd be able to afford this shit if you didn't break the fucking economy and load us up with tons of debt!" Seriously though, we need to just pay off the student loans of every single person in this country. That alone would give the economy a tremendous boost.
BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA...NO.
Seriously, I work 40+ hours a week of actual work in a grocery store deli for my recreationaluseless items. All 40 of those hours actually working with maybe an hour or two a week on my phone because addicting internet.
Wage progress and race progress under Obama's watch too. We're starting to see a return to a living minimum wage, and the Ferguson protests have finally kept the spotlight on police brutality.
Edit: it depends on the job. For some people, like small business owners, there aren't enough hours in the week to get all of their work done. It's mostly middle-management and administration jobs that have a lot of fiddle-around time. Some retail if you're front-end and it's a slow day.

Thank you for reminding me, I keep forgetting that email the library got saying that because I'm a government employee I could have my student debt forgiven.
I see a lot of offers like that, but I never TRUST them.
As for buying expensive shit, I don't really need to. As long as the parents don't mind me still living in this house...
And as for MARRIAGE, ha ha, why would anybody ever want to do that to themselves.

You gotta believe me when I scare you away, all that I wish for is that you would stayFor a while I preferred a job that pays based on work done instead of time spent. Would feel better earned...
And really, besides government benefits why would anyone want to get married? Being with one person your whole life...or not, since close to half of all marriages end in divorces.
You gotta believe me when I scare you away, all that I wish for is that you would stayMarriage is just a human invention used to force commitment anyway.
If two (or more) people didn't see some kind of official bond between themselves then they'd stray toward other people, "destabilizing the family dynamic" or whatever.
Including too all of those financial details.
And without that human desire for companionship and procreation people probably wouldn't need it at all.

You gotta believe me when I scare you away, all that I wish for is that you would staySo with the Jade Helm thing above, not only do we have people building IEDs here in the states with intent to use them against our military, but one of the bases in the area had a drive-by shooting. No one was injured, but they also haven't caught the two white guys responsible for it.
That stuff really pisses me off. They are committing treasonnote and yet they'll probably receive lighter sentences than any random minority pulled over for speeding.
That’s the epitome of privilege right there, not considering armed nazis a threat to your life. - Silasw

Yes but:
Rise of ISIS is favorable to the U.S geopolitically in the long run because it weakens Shia elements in the middle east (sorry for the realpolitik).
Its not just unemployment rates but steady job growth.
Citizens United is something he fought against (and lost).
He managed to appoint two of the most liberal justices ever. (Specially Sotomayor)
During his presidency the Republicans became increasingly unelectable.
etc...
Truth is that the bad stuff that happened wasn't really that bad. And the good stuff that happened was very good.
The world and the U.S is definitely a better place than it was in 2008.
