Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

When the Internet started getting popular, there was no such thing as IT courses. Though yeah, older people definitely have more trouble than the young ones when it comes to picking computer skills.
I generally scoff at the idea of getting degrees in Microsoft Word for example, but people have made a killing offering courses for it.
Plants are aliens, and fungi are nanomachines. That is because for people who are recruiting, it is easier to have an official document from Microsoft that says "This person has passed official Microsoft courses of Microsoft Word that certify this person knows Microsoft Word" than this person telling me "I know Microsoft word. I am the black mage. I cast the spells that makes the peoples fall down".
Might sound silly for Microsoft Word, but with stuff like Excell...fuck. The kind of things you can do with Excell if you really know it...
It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothesEasier for you. Not for the company to set up the test for dozens, or hundreds or applicants for a job post. No. Much easier for them to have the certification done by an outside trustworthy source.
Same thing as being a doctor. I can learn to heal people by you know. Volunteering to your local red cross. Doesnt mean you will be allowed to practice medicine.

Indeed, but it's hard to frame the issue in terms of a negative — don't tax these people whilst subsidizing their businesses with other people's taxes. Republicans favor redistribution upward in general terms, but it's easier to demonstrate in cheap, pithy bullet points by isolating that into specific policies.

Then, I'm glad that I am old enough for them to believe that I taught myself Excel.
Sides, Google spreadsheet is good enough anyway.
Anyway, if you're savvy enough with coding, even without a degree, people will rightly expect you can handle any GUI program.

Plants are aliens, and fungi are nanomachines. There are some fantastic things you can do with Excel and other Office apps just by knowing formulas, but the supreme power is in macro writing. I'm very good at VBA. Again, though, off-topic.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Another incident regarding the Jade Helm exercise: 3 guys were arrested for building and hoarding weapons in preparation to attack troops attending the exercise.
They were your typical rednecks with the anti-government, "THEY'RE GONNA DECLARE MARTIAL LAW AND TAKE OUR GUNS!" sort of attitude. Difference though is that they were going to the length of even creating pipe bombs, makeshift grenades, and other booby trap weapons to turn their houses into a kill-zone. No word on whether they were planning to ambush them in the field or wait until the exercise reach their neighborhood though.
On another topic...
Can anyone argue the Obama presidency hasn't been a runaway success???
I mean I disagree with him a lot, but he does seem to have accomplished almost everything he set his mind to.
He might be the greatest modern president.
I mean he is supposed to be entering "lame duck" territory but instead is adopting an "I will stop giving a fuck" attitude.

Well to give his detractors some credit, that last one really wasn't his doing.
Thanks Putin. Greatest recruiter NATO ever had.
Or not considering that Ukraine is a hell of example of how NATO won't come save you when Russia comes knocking but eh, we'll see how people go.

Oh really when? The unemployment rate is down but that's more because people just stopped looking for work. Granted that's not really his fault. Obama could have done a lot more to create good jobs if the Republicans stopped being assholes about government funding.
edit: The thing about Obama is that a lot of the things going wrong aren't strictly his fault. They're either out his control or they're something he probably would have handled a lot better if the Republicans would stop fighting him. I'm also unsure how much of the good stuff can be attributed to him. The economy was probably going to slowly improve on its own even if he did nothing.
