Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I don't know if that says more about Germany or Hitler himself, at least he had the excuse of syphilis and Parkinson's.
But Margret Sanger was perfectly normal and healthy yet some of the stuff she's said does not make her worthy of anything let alone an award.
"As an advocate of birth control I wish … to point out that the unbalance between the birth rate of the 'unfit' and the 'fit,' admittedly the greatest present menace to civilization, can never be rectified by the inauguration of a cradle competition between these two classes. In this matter, the example of the inferior classes, the fertility of the feeble-minded, the mentally defective, the poverty-stricken classes, should not be held up for emulation.... On the contrary, the most urgent problem today is how to limit and discourage the over-fertility of the mentally and physically defective."- The Eugenic Value of Birth Control Propaganda October 1921, page 5.

Look upon my privilege ye mighty and despair. An argument about Sanders or Warren as contenders is really an argument about policy. I'm always happy to argue about policy, but people who like to consider those two crazy lunatics aren't, because the popular conception supports that view, but an actual policy discussion doesn't.
By keeping the domain of discussion out of specifics and instead on the minds of the electorate, one is able to maintain one's position, in direct contradiction to facts.

That’s the epitome of privilege right there, not considering armed nazis a threat to your life. - Silasw![]()
But that's not Fascism. Of course, technically it's not Communism either, it's some strain of Socialism, which we all know is all really Communism anyway.
But seriously, Republicans are against starting a job program and employing tens of thousands of Americans to do anything, if it's funded by the government, even if it would save money and improve the economy, because ... I dunno, Obama or something? Or they can't stop sucking on Kochs long enough to ask them to pay the corporate taxes they (and many other companies) have owed for years?

Mother, will they put me in the firing line?
Ooooh aah, is it just a waste of time?
Just take this song and replace "mother" with the "free market".

Republicans are against government hiring people to do anything, unless it's to go die in a war, expel undocumented immigrants, or invade people's bedrooms to make sure they aren't having unapproved kinds of sex.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Actually, I should expand that a bit. Republicans want government to spend money on:
- Tanks, planes, guns, bombs, etc., for our military to expend in wars or sell to other nations, as long as they are Made in the USA by their pet defense contractors.
- But not to pay soldiers decent wages or support them after they leave the service.
- Immigration police to round up undocumented workers and ship them back home.
- But they still want them because they are cheap and easily abused labor, so those deportation efforts can't be too effective.
- A big wall around our country to keep out anyone we don't like, unless we want them as cheap and easily abused labor.
- Bedroom/bathroom police, to make sure we aren't having gay sex or using the wrong toilet for our birth-assigned gender.
- Abortion police, to make sure that all the teens who are denied contraception and sex education carry their unwanted, out of wedlock babies to term so they can join the ranks of kids in poverty.
- Ghetto police, to make sure that blacks and Hispanics and other minorities remain safely locked up in jail for whatever offenses we can think of.
Did I miss anything?

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Well, they seem to be fine with Asians as their doctors and programmers.
And speaking of programming, if you have trouble finding a job or you have loved ones having job troubles, get into it (now). And I do not just mean getting a loan to get a coding degree. Don't be afraid to read the manuals.
Right now, coding is a blue ocean.
Plants are aliens, and fungi are nanomachines. Many fire departments are staffed by volunteers, so they aren't even paying for the labor.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"

Elizabeth Warren shouldn't run for President, because she's already more influential in the Senate and Sanders is covering that angle.
