Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Clinton has begun advertising in New Hampshire and Iowa
. Her aim is to lay out her life story, explain her background, especially emphasizing the hard scrabble life of her mother. Concerned that the "tough" approach of her last campaign didn't motivate voters who didn't see her as representing the common American, Clinton focused instead on her accomplishments with the Children's Defense Fund and her family history, ultimately aiming to present herself as the "grandmother-in-chief".

That's republican primary vote only polls, and he's only getting 20% of them. In a race with a reasonable number of candidates he's be coming in very low in the ranking, but because so many Republicns are running the vote is split massively.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ Cyran(Forbes, Stand Collender) Chance of a Government Shutdown this fall rises to 60%
Basically Republicans haven't been using their time to effectively pass budget bills, and not enough of the government will have stable funding. As well, on top of it, Republicans want to do two items the President is threatening to veto:
- Underfunding domestic security agencies to overfund the Pentagon
- Defund Planned Parenthood.
I love the "overfund the Pentagon line" because clearly Defense needs to be cut, but ignore the fact that Social Security and the saftey net takes up more than half the budget, and nobody apart from the baby boomers are gonna see a damn penny of it.
But we can't cut that.
The old folks at home would revolt. I can see it now, hordes of elderly people flooding Washington.
Defund Planned Parenthood?
why not tax them instead?
All that money they make from the sales of dead fetuses, could go to more useful things like say Welfare.
On another note, who cares if they underfund Home Security, they are too intrusive with their surveillance, they profile, tap phone lines, and monitor your internet.

Look upon my privilege ye mighty and despair.Seeing as the Pentagon itself has said it doesn't need or want the money Congress is spending I@m gonna go with yes, yes it does need to be cut.
Well yeah that's kinda what goverment exists to do, to provide help to its citizenry in times of trouble and old age.
Planned Parenthood sells dead fetusus? It makes money from dead fetuses? Got a source on that?

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranThere is a difference between "Funding defense as it is needed" and "Putting money into every orifice in the pentagon so it can fall down towards the industry weather they like it or not."
Overfunding the pentagon is not for Defense. Its for the Defense industry.

"You can reply to this Message!"The American military periodically sends someone to Congress to ask for less funding. It's part of the reason they have so many random experiments and projects going on. They're given the funding and they have to use it.
When the people being overfunded say they're being overfunded, I think it's not bias.

And Planned Parenthood doesn't make money off of the donation of fetal tissue to research. Money has to change hands there because processing, storage, and transportation aren't free, but that's like accusing a charity that mails care packages to soldiers of turning a profit because they have to pay UPS to do their stuff.
Social Security and Medicare taking up over half the budget is irrelevant. Those are transfer payments. That's just distribution of funds within the system; it is not, in and of itself, spending so much as it is allowing the government to spend instead of the elderly.
Unless you're saying that the elderly shouldn't get health care.
So, you know, don't make bad shallow arguments like that.
It is true that the US government is basically an insurance company with an army though, sure.
Yes, that is exactly what the IRS is for. The basis for the legitimacy of any government is its ability to compel payment of taxes by force.

"You can reply to this Message!"I don't think so, but they have the ability to request warrants in federal court, whereby the actual armed folks come calling.

Interestingly enough, the IRS criminal investigation unit are allowed firearms. Who knew?
And if I remember correctly the IRS was armed during prohibition, or at least the branch that became the ATF did.

Took a look at the betting sites. Clinton's in the lead. The next two highest are Republican with Bernie in 4th place.
Unless Bernie can get pass Bush and Walker, it's safer for the Democrats to make Clinton their nominee.
Trump is in 6th place - why.
