The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

If the capital of the USA is not going to be Washington DC, there is no argument against making it New York City.

Margins are very thin, especially when leverage (borrowing money against stock and buying more stock) gets out of control. Small wins go huge (and are divided among the profiteers who made it happen), small losses snowball (and cause the profiteers to be given golden parachutes and hired at other companies while the original company goes bankrupt or gets bailed out).

[up]Yes there is: where the hell are they going to find the space for the necessary government offices; the Pentagon, Capitol, White House, and all the other government buildings DC has?

I say put it in New Orleans or Detroit.

There's arguments to be made for relocating things like the Pentagon to a location mostly separate from a new national capitol. And preferably the Congress shouldn't be able to override local lawmakers the way they currently do to DC's city council. (I read something about how they could just nearly automatically veto anything the council tries to do in their own city. This seems unfair.)

Well, that's when Republicans control congress, because DC is a severely democratic town. Also why DC won't get state-level perks until the Democrats get a supermajority.

Oh right forgot about the whole Capital not allowed to govern itself thing. Well in that case let's just have New York conquer the whole rest of this uncivilized country.[lol]

You know, the debate over where to put the capital got so bad back in the day, people were seriously thinking the country would split up over it. One Congressman sarcastically suggested putting the new city on wheels and driving it across the country forever.

Another compromise solution would have been a split similar to South Africa (awaits Euo's PM about the real nature of South Africa), except in our case we could have put the three branches in different cities, like if Congress was in Baltimore, the President in New York, and the Supreme Court in Charleston.

But DC can self-govern much as any city in a state can self-govern: cities have no rights, per se, and are totally at the mercy of their state constitution and their state legislature. The only difference with DC is that their overseers are people from all over the country, some of whom are proud of how little they care about the city.

California objects to this blatant East Coast bias.

[up][up]Nah if we do that it means we cannot govern ourselves and have to be overruled by congress in local maters.

Well, you guys are making a very good retread of the old arguments that showed why the capital city needed to be its own thing, and not in one of the preexisting states. tongue

Learn how to make a decent burrito!

Putting aside the Empire State's criminal lack of decent Mexican food, here's some actual political news: Several presidential candidates attend the National Urban League's annual convention.

Democrat Hillary Clinton sought to persuade African-Americans on Friday to resist any temptation to side with Republican Jeb Bush in the 2016 presidential race as they offered differing visions on how to tackle economic and racial inequality

"I don't think you can credibly say that everyone has a 'right to rise' and then say you're for phasing out Medicare or for repealing Obamacare. People can't rise if they can't afford health care," she said.

Bush has been trying to expand the appeal of his party by vowing to go places where Republicans haven’t been seen in years, such as Hispanic neighborhoods and African-American churches

Bush has been trying to expand the appeal of his party by vowing to go places where Republicans haven’t been seen in years, such as Hispanic neighborhoods and African-American churches

Bush recently called for reforms to Medicare to make it more fiscally stable, including raising the retirement age and forcing wealthier beneficiaries to pay more.

He has said he would repeal the Affordable Care Act, commonly called Obamacare, and replace it with "catastrophic coverage" that would kick in when people can't afford to pay for health care.

"I want to work with the Urban League movement to end this injustice once and for all," said Bush, who touted his record on improving Florida's school system.

Bush received pockets of polite applause from the mainly African American crowd.

Put it in Omaha. We're central, you can split us off from the rest of Nebraska and they won't miss us, and we've got telecommunications infrastructure all over the place from the old SAC days.

A pending case in North Carolina may or have an effect on voting next year. After SCOTUS removed the voting requirements across the former Confederacy, a whole bunch of Republican state legislatures instantly started repealing measures used primarily by minorities, such as early voting and certain registration measures. And there's also pending lawsuits in Texas about voting as well.

This stuff has been going on for a while.

Either we get voting rights protected again or we face a huge backlash. Seems like there's nothing to get out the vote like angry protest votes. That's kind of depressing really.

The strikedown of the VRA was a wilful denial of political reality by SCOTUS: they are correct that this is something congress could easily rectify, knowing damn well that the Republicans are glad to have a gutted VRA and will never do a thing to fix it.

So another thing we'll have to wait for a Democratic majority for (or, i'll be in my mid-thirties, at least, before something is done about this).
