Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Eh, there's no real value in keeping that sort of thing secret. It's great if we're going to do it (especially if it's opened to public use as long as they publish their results, like... another supercomputer in the US whose name I can't remember right now), and if it gets us the world's most powerful computer, then even better — but it's not worth doing just for the bragging rights.

It's good for Democrats if Trump runs as an independent.
And yeah, why do we care what China does?
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Speaking of Trump, #2.
(Disclaimer: Cracked article funnyjournalism.)
Cracked argues that Trump's trashing of his brand doesn't affect his bottom line much, while running for office is (as ever) a profitable business for him. The fact that this time he's getting actual people to listen to him is just gravy.
Regarding the supercomputer thing, I still wonder why we can't just ask Sony to unlock the PS 3's firmware again. The Air Force already knows that you don't need a supercomputer if you have enough P S3s.

D.C. is sinking...and it has nothing to do with that one thing Republicans like to deny.
We might have to find a new capital city...

Glacial rebound is a real problem in a lot of places, it's why the south of England is sinking too (as observable on the Scily Isles, where old field walls and such are now underwater and where Roman records called the whole lot one island).
Outstanding choice!
...Wait, what was that third thing you said?

Well, assuming that you'll want to pick a city that a) is fairly sizable already and b) sits close enough to state borders so they can make it its own district again without ruffling too many feathers, there's a pretty clear leading candidate.
Kansas City, Missouri. Bonus points for being more geographically centered than D.C. is now.
Expergiscēre cras, medior quam hodie. (Awaken tomorrow, better than today.)That is the funny thing, because those financial reforms are piss-weak but have Wall Street completely losing their shit. Of course, the margins make all the difference in the cutthroat world of finance, even if at the end of the day they're still making billions of dollars, a small change to our eyes could be a $10 million difference to them.

Edit: Though I never said this thing should be kept secret permanently, just until it would be to late for the Chinese to construct a computer faster than us, and beat put it out before we did.
