Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Michael Bay's net worth laughs at your opinion of him.
Also, at a certain point you have to abandon your search for offensive things and recognize that billions of people refer to the United States as "America", and it's not going to change.

It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothesIt's not like the central and south American countries don't have proper demonyms. I get finding that a bit irritating but do most people really like to refer to themselves with such a broad term as "American" in that sense implies? It tells you basically nothing.

Them fancy learnin school people have been arguing that Michael Bay has had a much stronger impact on the tradition of filmmaking and media in general than people realize, much like George Lucas did with his Star Wars movies. His finger prints can be seen quite visibly on the current crop of superhero movies, for instance. This is setting aside the politics of those movies.
The point about my previous post wasn't about liking or disliking Michael Bay on a personal level or even how much money his movies make. It was about recognizing how his technique is worth studying, replicating and refining. Subject matter has nothing to do with it.
By comparison, Chuck Norris may be a homophobic douchebag, but his record as a world-class kickboxer shouldn't be ignored, and he most certainly changed the face of Korean martial arts whether you like it or not.

Doesn't have to. You say American and people automatically think the United States.
Besides Germany, France, and other European countries don't get hung up on the term.
Hell, the Germans even call us Amerikaners. Its not that big of deal.

Look upon my privilege ye mighty and despair.I mean it does kinda show the arrogance on which the US was founded, what other country had the gal to name itself after an entire continent of which it takes up only a section?

South Africa.
-shakes fist angrily-
Also, one thing I found funny while I was visiting the UK. It probably had an impact that I was a tourist in tourist areas, but the tour guides and people who attended us tended to speak to people from the U.S like "Oh so you're american! From what state?" and to the baffled eyes of the yankees they would go like "It is so huge! Each state is basically its own country!"
Saying you are "American" from the continent is as useful information as saying you are "American" from the "country".
DAMN KANGAROOS

You make it sound like the US is called America or something. It's called United States of America. Nothing about that name implies the US is the only country on the continent. It's just a group of states under a common government that happen to be located in America. What would we even use besides American? Mexico, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, etc all have pretty straightforward demonyms. You can't really get anything out of United States.

Fair point, though they at least included the word "South".

The region is Oceania[1]
It implies that it represents the states of America, same way the "United Kingdom of Great Britain" implies control over all of Britain, "Republic of China" implies control over all China, and "People's Democratic Republic of Korea" implies control over all Korea.

Yankees would get confusing since that's a popular sports team. I thought Gringos only applied to white people living in the US.
You're right that Spanish doesn't have this problem unfortunately that's not the dominant language here. Statian could work I guess but that doesn't specify which states you mean.
edit: Unitian? U Sian? I really can't think of anything.

The "people might get them confused with the team" is basically not others' problems. You don't get to choose your nickname in school :P
I mean. If you want stuff to be exceedingly accurate to its last point, the brits could refer to the United States as "Those insurrectionist terrorists".
TIT.
That's it. Your demonym is now TITs.
Problem solved. You're welcome, world.

This is an incredibly stupid reason but I don't think United-Stater sounds as good as American. It's also a bit too long.
edit: Stater isn't bad.
The problem is Yankees doesn't derive from our country name at all. I can't think of a single country that has a demonym that's completely unrelated to its name.

Costa Rican people are also known as "Ticos"
People from Barbados are also known as "Bajans"
Dominican Republic "Quisqueyanos"
Falkland Islands "Belongers".
Whole wiki entry for the British demonyms
Guatemalans "Chapines"
Hondurans "Catrachos"
New Zealanders "Kiwis"
People from the Phillipines "Pinoys"
It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothesGuys. Please stop ignoring my TITs
. Just small enough that everyone would be able to handle them perfectly, but also showy enough that people will give them attention.
And yes. I have always wanted to say that.

On another note according to University of New Hampshires Bias Free Language Guide American is offensive:
“American” is problematic because it “assumes the U.S. is the only country inside [the continents of North and South America].”
You can't make this up. Its like the term Centeral and South American don't exisist.
Oh lordy, lord, Ise nevah use dat term again.
