Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard, who sold secrets while working as a civilian in the Navy and was jailed for 30 years (out of a life sentence) for passing highly sensitive data to Israeli officials (and possibly other countries), is set to be paroled in November.

While 30 years is probably sufficient (and any intel he still has is likely long out of date), I do wonder what Israel finally offered Washington to get him out. Perhaps something regarding the nuclear accord with Iran?

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. With the Trump defense, it could be a case of Fair for Its Day, similar to how "Gay Panic" used to be an affirmative defense until the murder of Matthew Shepard.
As for Rape Culture, that stems from a number of bullshit double-standards (primarily the Madonna-Whore Complex), but - although rare - the fact remains that, with how some of the laws are written, A Man Is Always Eager when it comes to sex with women, while women are in need of protection.
"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"
I'm well aware of the cultural phenomena underlying rape culture and patriarchy, but while they do provide a rationalization for some of the attitudes, they in no way provide a defense for some of the hateful things people say and do when confronted with the issue.
What we see over and over again is a seething undercurrent of sheer hate for women that goes above and beyond anything justified by traditional social roles.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I think part of the issue with rape culture and misogyny in general is that you have a significant number of people who think they're not misogynistic, because they make misogynistic jokes "ironically." On a conscious level, they thing that kind of behavior isn't acceptable, but when it becomes so pervasive, it becomes acceptable on a subconscious level.
Well, that's just a wild theory. And I think it more pertains to internet culture than serious culture issues in meatspace. But whenever I posit this theory, I get a bunch of people yelling at me for having no sense of humor, so I assume it probably touches a nerve.
That matter gives me such a stomachache.
As much as I do think that people should try to avoid the need for abortion, I also feel frustrated with the anti-abortion side.
"Look, we cannot take care of all the unborn children. We can't even take proper care of the ones who are born."
I suppose it's easier to focus energy on insisting that people who have abortions are going to hell instead of concentrating on the really hard job on figuring out how to properly take care of all the children who are born.
Plants are aliens, and fungi are nanomachines. So, just got exposed to a trailer for a movie about Benghazi. And directed by Michael Bay, so you just know it's going to be a thought-provoking look at the situation.
"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"Wonder how blatantly political it will be? I mean, Bay at least tends to avoid do controversial stuff because he's aiming for a wide audience and isn't out to make you think but given the subject matter, who knows if this won't be GOP/anti-Clinton propaganda.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Too Soon is the appropriate term here. And it will remain so for decades....
Honestly, I just have to shake my head at the very thought of Michael Bay directing a Benghazi movie.
Leviticus 19:34

I'm not going to mince words. "Rape culture" is a very real thing and has its defenders on all sides of the political spectrum, but it is particularly virulent among the right because it's just an extension of their historical disdain for women's rights.
