The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Even legal immigrants feel frustrated by illegal immigrants, because it's like people cutting in front of the queue.

Not true from my experience.

Only people like that I ever met were second and third generation Cuban-Americans.

First generation immigrants and even second generation Americans tend to be ENORMOUSLY supportive of legal and illegal immigrants.

It's hard to enthusiastically support a political party that thinks your kind should all be sent home.

I sometimes wonder which came first. Did Democrats adopt immigration reform as part of their platform to court Hispanics or did they already believe in that and it led to Hispanics overwhelmingly supporting them?

@Fighteer: To be fair, fiscal conservatives have mostly realized that kind of policy is a really bad idea, but they're not the ones running the show any more.

Let's make sure we are clear about the parameters of the game that's being played. Obviously, Tea Party Republicans want all the Hispanics to go home because they are "Stealing Our Jerbs". Plutocrat Republicans, however, realize that's not a realistic option, and besides they love themselves some illegals.

Why? Because they are cheap labor: cheap to hire, don't need to be insured, can have their payroll taxes dodged, can't complain about working conditions, can't unionize, and are infinitely replaceable.

Kicking all the illegals out would be devastating to a number of industries, ranging from construction to housekeeping to child care to fruit picking and more, as they would suffer a tremendous labor shortage. We've already seen that happen on a micro scale in some states that tried to "get tough" on illegals; some crops had to be abandoned because nobody showed up to pick them.

However, raising their labor standards to the point where they command the same wage/benefit requirements as U.S. citizens would be very costly to the bottom line — it might make our precious supermarket tomatoes more expensive. So Big Business adores the status quo. The problem is that the status quo is not tenable thanks to the same forces that are driving the Republican party into other forms of extremism.

[up] That won't drive off his supporters. Most of them probably also believe that you can't rape your wife.

[up] Have those people not heard of abusive marriages? And what is rape but a form of abuse? Anytime the spouse doesn't want sex but is forced into it, that's rape, married or not. End of story.

Are you kidding? The Tea Party mentality is rooted in Ye Olden Days when larnin' your wife was just a part of the husband's duties.

I don't know, but "marital rape" is still a crime that is recognized only sporadically by the legal system.

On paper, Marital Rape has only been a crime in all 50 states since 1993.

Did Donald rape his spouse, though? She said "emotional" rape, which is also awful but I don't think is the kind everyone is talking about now.

Yeah it's a grey one, she seems to have flipped flopped on what exactly it is she's describing. Still that's all beside the point, regardless of if a rape happened or not the statement "by the very definition, you can't rape your spouse" is still fucking horrible and totally false.

According to the book, yes, it was actual rape, not just emotional. Here's a review of it from 1993, just so we have something a little older than all the news stories today. And if that's not sufficient, here's an excerpt from it.

[up][up] What I mean is that the anti-immigrant fervor is part and parcel of the same Tea Party insanity that has taken over the GOP primary process and is sending politicians to Washington who genuinely believe that they need to be rounded up and deported, as opposed to paying lip service while sitting on the issue so that their business sponsors can keep their cheap labor.

Even if we take political passions out of it, this is the sort of celebrity "he said she said" that we've been tuned not to take seriously, at least not until overwhelming evidence comes around, a la Bill Cosby.
