Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Huckabee was another one who was good at looking reasonable. Especially he has a good touch for the web.
I was wondering who would be a fitting running mate for Trump, since the GOP establishment, even the movement conservative politicians, don't like him. Who is sensationalist, xenophobic, and wildly popular with people who long for "straight talk?"
Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
I am amused by how conservatives seem to think that Israel is some delicate, vulnerable nation despite basically being the nation with the most powerful military in the Middle East, is also a nuclear state, and has previously handed the Arab nations their asses repeatedly whenever they try to attack it.
Nice op-ed on the world's reaction to Trump's (apparent) rise. I think the comparison to Italy's Berlusconi is pretty accurate.

Despite its power, Israel is just a tiny little nation on the ocean surrounded by potential hostile powers. The Arab nations could wipe it out if they unified and attacked as one, but fortunately their own differences prevent any kind of coordinated action. Anyway, possession of nuclear weapons is supposed to act as a deterrent to war, not a weapon of war. If you get invaded and you get to the point where you're launching them, you've already lost — you're trying to make your opponents' victory a Pyrrhic one.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Israel is tough but they're very far from invincible. When the Lebanese got a hold of some genuine Russian RPG-29s during their last war the Israelis lost tanks and armored vehicles by the dozen.
Plus during the most recent culling of local Palestinians their entire military straight up ran out of ammunition and we had to give them some.
And Iran is hardly a pushover either. Back in the day the Iraqis had locally and illegally produced knockoffs of the already heavily nerfed Russian export tanks. Iran is a formidable opponent with good equipment and good soldiers. Plus if the Russians are serious about giving them S-300 SAM systems you can kiss any chance of an Israeli or American excursion goodbye, it'd be full on war or nothing.
And there's no way we'd come out of that without some serious losses.

Oh really when?
Aren't we getting off topic?

The very fact someone like Trump who is so hateful and vitriolic is getting the support he is should be a point of concern, not jest. People can laugh all day but they fail to remember the crowd adoring him is the crowd that votes. This crowd also put an actor and a cowboy in the office and still swear by them.
"Psssh. Even if you could catch a miracle on a picture any person would probably delete it to make space for more porn." - AszurI live in a red state. People like this are real, are dangerous, and do make good on their promises.
I just lost my job and my healthcare thanks to people like Trump both the voters and the politicians.
Your joke is my reality.
So no. It ain't funny. It isn't cute. And it does need to be treated seriously.
"Psssh. Even if you could catch a miracle on a picture any person would probably delete it to make space for more porn." - AszurOne can make the argument that ridiculing these people is the best way to deal with them, because taking them seriously only serves to validate their beliefs. You're not going to persuade them to think differently, are you?
Obviously, the harm they do is very real and very serious, but it's not like we can arrest Trump for being an asshole. Like it or not, the assholes in this country get to vote, and suborning our democratic principles in the name of ideology is what they do, not what we do.
A lot of people in the "center" of the debate keep calling for civility between the two sides, as if there's a happy middle ground that everyone can meet at and agree to get along. The problem is that there is no longer such a middle ground. Democratic politics have not really changed over the past few decades. It's the other side that's gone batshit crazy in public... but the catch is that it was always this crazy underneath; it just didn't dare show itself.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Yeah, because that worked out so well against Huckabee.
Young Earth Creationist, lol. What a clown.
Oh wait. He actually gained a shitload of traction as a politician and is now one of the most volatile public officials to come out of the South.
And the C student who likes to play dress-up led our nation for eight years while our current multi-racial president gets impaled every time he plays golf or every time he farts in front of a veteran without saying "excuse me".
Maybe we're grouchy because it's a Monday morning, but Gabrael's point couldn't be any stronger.
Well, what would you like us to do? Stage mass arrests of Tea Partiers? Deny the vote to anyone who espouses a belief in Creationism? Send "lone gunmen" into GOP political rallies?

I wish it was possible to criticize Israel without getting the Holocaust thrown in your face.
