Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Could you all please at least wait for the bodies to be buried and mourned before pulling this crap? Would be greatly appreciated.
Lafayette StrongI live in Lafayette. I'm just tired of seeing shit like 'oh, thank the lord it was a white guy!' or whatever views you might have. Let us mourn.
Lafayette StrongToo Soon itself can be used as a means to slant "talk about gun laws? we just had a tragic shooting!" said the NRA rep.
All the more reason to talk about it, I think.
Incidents like these must spark serious conversation when it comes to motives and laws and societal causes and so on.
These shootings happen because of inaction and turning a blind eye to racial hate. We let them happen.
So we have to be proactive in preventing them and solving the root problems that cause them. If that means we've gotta be a bit insensitive and rude then so be it.
Oh really when?![]()
When it seems you're having mass shootings every other day, invoking Too Soon means never talking about it.
Something that stood out to me from the shooter's online history:
The Hatewatch Blog, which is run by the Intelligence Project of the Southern Poverty Law Center, uncovered that Houser posted about his fondness for Hitler, neo-Nazis and lone wolves on several online forums.
"Do not mistake yourselves for one minute, the enemy sees all posted on this website," he wrote on a site dedicated to the New York chapter of Greece's far-right Golden Dawn, which espouses fascist and neo-Nazi ideologies.
"I do not want to discourage the last hope for the best, but you must realize the power of the lone wolf, is the power that can come forth in ALL situations.Look within yourselves," he continued.
I'd like to apoligize to everyone. I lashed out of anger. I shouldn't have took it out any of you. This has just been a frustating time for eveyone down here.
Lafayette StrongI am wary of anything that seems to too obviously confirm my existing biases when it comes to these matters, but it does look as if this dude is a classic right-wing nutjob who should never have been let within ten miles of a firearm.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"![]()
It's okay, I admit, though we should talk about these problems, it did seem inappropriate for somebody to be relieved about the killer being a certain identity, though thoughts cannot be helped.
Edit: Though I am ashamed to admit that after the Boston bombing,I still considered myself a Republican at the time, I was relieved that the bombers were Muslim and not right wing nuts, as MSNBC had been predicting with a certain amount of glee.

I Bring Doom, and a bit of gloom, but mostly gloom. It is a sign of our divisions as a nation that we can witness such events and be "rooting" for the attacker to be someone that casts a bad light on our political opponents. It can't be helped, though.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Going to be curious as to what possible security increases will happen for Mardi Gras and the other half a million festivals we have in and around the area.
Lafayette StrongI'm sorry if my earlier comments were inappropriate. I just dread seeing any minority making the news for some big crime because I know the people around where I live will use it as proof that they're all evil.
For me at least, it's less about hoping to have some dirt on the other side and more about not wanting to see any more "justification" for burning crosses.
Oh really when?

UKIP is basically the like the British Tea Party right?
