Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

That used to be part of various educational programs in schools.
Aprilla had to visit a prison I believe as a field trip. I will have to ask.
Anyway, again, education, social reform and healthcare are the key here. If people don't know any better they are going to keep doing stupid things.
I just lost my health insurance today. I also am being laid off yet again in a few weeks. The more this happens the more I can see why the drug trade or something else like that is so appealing.

It was Tucker Unit and McPherson Unit (women's correctional).
One of the drug offenders there was a former kindergarten teacher. A very attractive young blonde with an MA in childhood education, a shitload of student loan debt and a bad circle of friends that led one thing to another.
I'll let you all consider the implications.

Has anyone seen the video response to being doxxed by the Donald
Senator Lindsey Graham posted? Say what you want about the guy, but that was one of the more....unique ways of handing that

Unfortunately, I think the overvaluation of "higher education" will only get worse in the future. That plus computers erasing more and more jobs.
As for being like the Scandinavian countries in terms of social services. 60% taxes & 30% of the population is employed by the government. It's easier to trust the government with most of your income if you're employed by the government.
Plants are aliens, and fungi are nanomachines.Dylann Roof has been charged with federal hate crimes that may result in a death sentence
.
Apparently South Carolina doesn't have a hate crime statute, although that doesn't surprise me that much thanks to what Garcon and Gabrael have posted.
And Gabrael, I'm really sorry to hear about that :(
I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotMy younger brother (the insane ultra-rightest/libertarian hybrid) says that Donald Trump is doing a great job of "trolling" other politicians, and proving that the media is full of crap.
I... think he doesn't know what he's talking about. If Trump is trolling and isn't instead trying to inflate his own ego, he's doing a damn good job of it. If he is trying to troll the media, at least the Huffington Post (a left publication) isn't falling for it, though the rest certainly are.
Not sure quite what he means about Trump showing the media is full of crap. After all, Trump gave away the cell phone number of a political rival, and made himself look like an asshole. The media reporting on that made him look stupid, not them.
Because we needed proof that the media is full of crap.
If one takes as a premise that the media are stooges of a system designed to keep us all within neat little social and political boundaries and hide The Truth (tm) of how we are all being manipulated, then Trump's ... verbal diarrhea ... could be seen as a "the Emperor has no clothes" kind of thing. I guess. I'm not good at troll logic but I can try.

Trump is threatening a third party run? Oh that would be a dream come true.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. It would be amazing. It would split the Republican vote enough to guarantee a Democratic win even absent other factors, and so it's something that the GOP will be desperately trying to stop.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Ehhhhh... don't party just yet.
See, the democrats already have a leg up in the presidential race anyway. A third party run certainly helps the Dems out further in that-but part of the issue is, just how much dominance are the Republicans gonna have in congress.
A trump third party means both the crazies and the moderates (HA!) on the right can vote without feeling disgusted, meaning turnout could be better, and that congressional domination may be more powerful.
Of course, Dems are likely to win back the senate just because it's a favorable year, but the House is almost certainly going to stay in Republican control.
But that was going to happen anyway. The gerrymandering spread more or less guarantees the GOP controls the House until 2023, at least (this is assuming the Democrats step up their short game in the next 5 years and make good showings in state houses, which on the whole are more Republican than they've ever been).

I have seen it. The one where the inmates just yell at them and stuff? Would be funny if it wasnt sad
It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothes
