The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Well you're a Mexican so you'd probably be treated as a hostile foreign entity.

Oh really when?

Yes, Costa Rica.

Maybe he will keep Panama for himself, Costa Rica for his toupee. I think there is already a Trump Tower in Panama City.

EIN VOLK! EIN REICH! EIN BERNIE SANDERS!

The National Review has decided it no longer wants to be a serious publication.

In the Bernieverse, there’s a whole lot of nationalism mixed up in the socialism. He is, in fact, leading a national-socialist movement, which is a queasy and uncomfortable thing to write about a man who is the son of Jewish immigrants from Poland and whose family was murdered in the Holocaust.

Yeah, it was worse to read.

I like how it bitches about the fact that he goes by "Bernie" instead of Mr Sanders or Senator.

While Sanders is very, very far from my favorite candidate, I find it absolutely hilarious to call him a Nazi.

Though really, if you compare someone to Hitler by putting their personal politics side by side, you're entirely missing the point.

If you want to compare someone to Hitler, you do so by analyzing their views on empathy and morality. If they say things like "I don't see why man should be less cruel than nature" or "It is not truth that matters, but victory", then it starts becoming fair to compare them to Hitler.

Is there a politician that cannot be described as a nationalistic jingoistic bastard? Specially in the U.S, a nation that believes itself blessed because it deserves to be blessed as something so ingrained intheir cultural and national identity.

But really, I might be biased. I personally despise anything even resembling jingoism. The U.S is just a big example, not a unique one at all.

I tried reading that National Review article. Is this an Op-Ed or something? It's written in an incredibly informal way. I swear it's satire but from what I know of them that probably isn't the case.

edit: I still love how people can't seem to tell the different between Nazis, Communists, and Socialists.

Wait what do you mean the National Review is a serious website.

I'm still dumbstruck of what passes off as socialist in the US, seriously, your "die hard commies" are "fascists right wing nazis" down in South America.

Reform the justice system to make it illegal for a black man to get a harsher sentence than his white counterpart.
This gives me pause, only because the only way to do that is to completely mandate every sentence with strict limits, removing any option for judicial leniency. We've already seen how that worked out with various Three Strikes and mandatory minimums - it ended up putting more minorities in prison than before.
Order new studies.
That's why we have the SenselessCensus Bureau.

Why couldn't it be strict maximum limit unless a lesser sentence prescribed by the judge?

Kostya (Unlucky Thirteen)
#96875: Jul 21st 2015 at 6:28:23 PM

[up][up]I don't think Judges should be letting people off easy. I realize this could lead to other problems which is why we need to work on making the punishments for crimes logical. For example let's stop giving jail time for non-violent drug offenses.

[up]That could still lead to minorities always getting the maximum sentence while white people get a fraction of that.
