The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Don't we have some kind of longstanding policy on not getting into abortion debates or something?

[up] If there is, I wasn't aware of it, though I can certainly see the wisdom of it.

Yeah, I've heard the "Trump is a Democratic plant" rumors. The best versions involve an angle around the deleted e-mails from her private server and the correspondence with Trump they contained. Plausible, but most of the folks throwing these conspiracy theories around don't seem to realize just what a decade and a half can do to a person's political alignment. Dennis Miller comes to mind as an example.

[down]Yes, yes it would. grin

I think it would be hilariously awesome if he were a plant, conducting some kind of False Flag Operation.

Operation Faulkner, for the base he's shaving off the GOP who seem to like him because they want to be like him?

Speaking of the Trump man, he's on Fox.

He's currently saying that under his presidency he'd fine the government of Mexico $100,000 for every illegal immigrant that crosses the border.

Oh really when?

Considering most of his rhetoric seems to be based around the idea that Mexico is a hostile foreign power, I wouldn't be surprised actually.

Why are we fining Mexico? It's not like they're intentionally sending people here.

[up]Probably because they "aren't doing enough to keep their people there".

Not a totally baseless argument, though I personally believe it should fall on us to keep our border clear of trespassers.

The more time passes, the more I think "Trump is a sleeper agent" might not be so far off the mark.

Either way, it's !@#$ing hilarious.

For the record, it's mostly not Mexicans coming through, but people from further down in Central America that Mexico mostly turns a blind eye to as they pass through because, hey, they've got enough problems to deal with, right?

[up][up]"Hilarious" is not how I'd put it.

There are rumours, among certain political groups in México, that the Senate is considering the possibilities and consequences of breaking all relations with the U.S. until they shut him up.

I'd say nothing will come off it and that it's just a rumour, but sometimes I think my country is the Walder Frey of the world: living only to brood over all the slights it's suffered.

So, I can totally see my country doing something that stupid if they think it'll screw over the U.S. Taking you with me, and all that.

[up]Generally speaking, it is believed that only the Mexican army could really lower the number of illegal immigrants trying to cross the border. However, sending the armed forces against them would be a PR nightmare (to put it mildly). Also, they're kinda busy dealing with the narcos and the one hundred million storms we get every summer.

I actually have heard more than one bad Republican politician be accused of being a democratic mole of sorts (or a Republican In Name Only) by perhaps saner conservatives.

Speaking of which, I'm considering the opinion that we should pull most of our presence out of the Middle East in order to offer aid to Mexico in its drug war.

That shit should not be happening so close to the most powerful military force in the world.

Seems not. He's got quite the net worth.

[up][up] The War on Drugs is an utterly useless waste of resources. Here are the actions that would actually help the situation, in no particular order:

  • Make the possession, sale, and use of marijuana completely legal. Make the possession and use of most other drugs no longer a felony. Rather, being found to be in possession or under the influence will get you referred to a treatment program.
  • Set up government-regulated sales and treatment centers for most controlled substances. Addicts can get treatment without the risk of criminal prosecution and can be administered regulated doses of their drugs in order to wean them off. Unregulated sales will still be a felony.
  • Commute the sentences of all non-violent offenders serving time for drug use and possession. Commute the sentences of all non-violent offenders serving time for marijuana distribution.
  • Give the Mexican government direct military, police, and financial support, in unlimited quantities, for rooting out their drug traffickers. We caused their problem; we have to be responsible for fixing it.
  • Allow immigration in unlimited quantities as long as they register and abide by our laws. These individuals will receive work permits, allowing them to remain in the country, hold gainful employment, and eventually seek a more permanent status if they choose.

In a nutshell, we must simultaneously choke off the flow of cash to the cartels while massively increasing the flow of legitimate money into the Mexican economy. This will seriously lessen the financial power of drug lords, which will also lessen their political power and their ability to recruit the populace into their trade.

My own guess is that Trump has some kind of bet with someone somewhere about whether or not he can be president, and he has come to a calculated decision that, given where he's coming from, this is his best chance of success.

It's somewhat disheartening if he's right, but again: I sincerely doubt he'll actually get anywhere once people start voting.

Congress is considering reforms to "just in time" scheduling, which has documented, seriously negative impacts on families, worker productivity, worker turnover, and customer satisfaction.

"Just-in-time" scheduling is the practice of tailoring worker hours to anticipated demand, calling employees to work with as little as a few hours' notice. This form of employment makes it extremely hard for workers to manage child care, attend school, take additional jobs, etc.
