Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Apparently the organization responsible for the video released the full unedited version. The edited version splices together parts where the PP employee talks about transportation fees and reimbursement for them with the clips about tissue harvesting and makes it look like she's talking about buying/selling tissue instead.
That can generally be assumed in such situations. Remember that integrity is completely superfluous to their operating agenda, which is to take down abortion providers at any cost. If blatant lies can be made to serve that end, then that's what they'll do. They are working in service of a "higher goal".

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"That limit, combined with a two-thirds reduction in the number of its centrifuges, would extend to a year the amount of time it would take Iran to make enough material for a single bomb should it abandon the accord and race for a weapon — what officials call “breakout time.” By comparison, analysts say Iran now has a breakout time of two to three months. Continue reading the main story
But American officials also acknowledged that after the first decade, the breakout time would begin to shrink. It was unclear how rapidly, because Iran’s longer-term plans to expand its enrichment capability will be kept confidential.
It's better than nothing... certainly better than going to war, not that Israel will acknowledge that.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Are we accepting that Iran will get nukes eventually? I'm not sure what geopolitical advantages that offers. As much as I'm not into invading foreign countries on a whim (*cough* Iraq), Iran does represent a threat to regional stability, all the more so if they are able to threaten nuclear attack on any nation that dares gainsay them.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I'd rather they didn't, but we can deal with that in 10 years, under president George III or whatever.
What I mean is, nukes are in some sense 2040s tech. Everyone who fears invasion by another country has some incentive to build them. If the U.S. isn't going to be acting as World Police, how long can we realistically keep them contained to only a few of the more powerful and stable countries?
It's mostly the non-proliferation treaty and the fact that most countries don't want the bother. Plenty of countries have tried over the years, aside from the one who succeeded and was convinced to stand down (South Africa), programs were toyed with in Iraq, Syria, Libya, and allegedly Brazil and Argentina. Nukes are by no means easy to make, but it's mostly a question of infrastructure. Once you have the reactors (and many of them do, thanks to legal exchange of nuclear tech for civilian purposes), then it's only a matter of time to figure out the switches and wires to make your nuclear material go boom.
Hell, the reactors Japan uses produce weapons-grade plutonium as a waste product. Japan's sitting on mountains of the stuff, but simply chooses not to.
And that international pressure will keep, although the management regime might change as we move away from US hegemony further into the century.
We can keep Iran away from a nuke indefinably if we stop giving it a reason to want one.
thing is as long as Iran has a reasonable fear of the US one day deciding to wreck shit and instate an oppressive dictatorship, Iran is going to want either a nuke or the ability to get a nuke quickly.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ Cyran![]()
Iran has plenty of regional enemies, one of which happens to be nuclear armed.
Even if the US and Iran do reconcile they still have no shortage of reasons to desire nuclear weapons, especially since one of those reasons (the nuclear armed one at that) is doing it's best to undermine the negotiations.
We know that Fox News doesn't give a damn about the truth when it comes to their pet agendas, and that its viewers will believe anything on the network that is critical of Democrats, liberals, or government. The other networks might report honestly, though.

And, of course, the barrier of "Breaking News!" vs. the correction found on page 19.
For example, the furor over the "doctored" Global Warming emails. Even the guy hired by the Koch brothers concluded that it was overhyped and the research (and findings) was completely valid. But aside from a few liberal news groups (e.g. The Daily Show), no one reported jack squat.
"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"Donald Trump is no Conservative
On paper, this is not someone you’d expect to excel in the 2016 Republican Party primary. But Donald Trump is excelling. Thanks to his celebrity, a few epic flip-flops, and his willingness to pander to the most xenophobic element of the GOP’s base, the real-estate developer and reality-TV star is polling near the top of the field. While he is unlikely to win the nomination, he may well appear at the presidential debates and continue to tarnish the GOP brand in the eyes of Hispanic voters.
What's that saying? "Conservatives aren't stupid, but stupid people are conservative"? I think we're seeing the result of so many stupid people being conservative.
@Le Garcon and Fighteer: Indeed. Even if it were definitively proven to be a fake, Fox News would never stop praising it as a true representation of the pro-choice side (or as they'd probably call it [if they don't already], "pro-death").

"Cynic, n. — A blackguard whose faulty vision sees things as they are, not as they ought to be." - The Devil's DictionaryWell, it seems the video is having its intended effect...

There should be a video analyzing that Planned Parenthood video and exposing the manipulation in it. Any volunteers?
