Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

We could see a large scale flare up of right wing violence, similar to what the left did in the Sixties. In which case it will be a few small shootouts, the occasional murder, mostly killing each other, and their only real accomplishment will be making everyone hate not only them, but their more moderate compatriots, resulting in the politics of the country shifting.
I Bring Doom, and a bit of gloom, but mostly gloom. As someone who lives in a place most likely to erupt in that, I seriously doubt it.
And even if we did, no way the media would call it for what it was.
Most of these people who talk the loudest and are the most get er done bullshit are blatant cowards who will only puff up if they have an audience.
It is the George Zimmermann's of the world you need to look out for.
And the cops.

I guess in the long term you could give a very bittersweet yay. If you want to see the country shift really far to the left, which personally I don't. On a side note, I don't think some of the more radical leftists in the 60's, like Weather underground or some elements of the Black Nationalist movement, realize just how much damage they did to their own cause. The "establishment" many of them were protesting against, are now considered the new fringe left. And no, not all of it can be blamed on some nebulous right wing conspiracy.

I Bring Doom, and a bit of gloom, but mostly gloom.Well, I mean, let's be frank.
The most likely occurrence is that Jeb Bush will win the nomination the same way Mitt Romney did. If the party loses the Presidential race, I'm sure there'll be hemming and hawing over why they can't win the presidency anymore, but they control enough of congress such that it's very difficult for them to suddenly deem themselves irrelevant.
I don't think we're "there yet" in terms of party implosion, no matter what happens.
Not an insurgency, but defiantly some violent acts. The Nineties had Waco and the Oklahoma city bombing fore one. Like I said, I suspect any future "wave" or right wing terror will be small scale and accomplish nothing except completely and utterly discrediting the ideas of the wannabe insurgents.
In their past certainly, but now, what has the Klan even done recently, hell their isn't really any unified group, just a bunch of racist nut jobs clinging to the shadows.

I never got their logic in doing that. They styled themselves as, amongst other things, defendants of Protestant christianity, and yet they burned down Protestant Churches. ISIS has a similar problem, but even then I have never heard of them attacking a Mosque of their own sect, though they love to attack Shia places of worship.
Just so we're clear, everyone does know that half of the burned churches have been proved to be accidents or natural causes, right? Only three were products of arson, and one of those is suspected to be due to a burglary, not potential hate crime.
That’s the epitome of privilege right there, not considering armed nazis a threat to your life. - SilaswAnd got press time largely due to very unfortunate timing.
Still I don't understand why anyone here is predicting entrenched terrorists or insurgents. For one, the people who want to actually secede are a very small number. For another, such small membership means largely unsustainable in any sense except as those people who show up at Tea Party events to yell and cheer a lot. And I really don't see how a right wing version of the Sixties could happen. Largely because the Sixties, as flawed as they were, tended to be more about equality than the blatant racism that comes along with the groups you guys think are gonna be the insurgent types.
If anything we'll get more Cliven Bundy incidents the the government will be forced to find a way to deal with them that doesn't look like they're just folding in the face of resistance to paying legally owed fees.
If I recall a stat that a few news sites discussed remarkably less, there's an average of something like 30 church fires per week across the USA, with one out of ten of those being classified as arson.
A lot of church buildings are really old with very antiquated electric systems.

@Trump is a Democrat plant: The Democrats must have a ridiculous long game going on. Trump's been a raging idiot for years. Of course they somehow sent a letter to Hawaii telling them to announce Obama's birth years ago so I guess this isn't outside the realm of possibility.
