The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Chuck Norris is a wing-nut. Coming from me, that's probably saying a lot.

Having said that, I do hear he's a pretty nice guy, if alarmingly reactionary.

Yeah, I edited out the "a bit" part.

But seriously, I can read Starship Troopers and not be bothered by the preachiness of it. If I say someone's a wing-nut, they are.

Norris said Obama's re-election would trigger a thousand years of darkness. Since we aren't in an awesome post-apocalyptic sci-fi/fantasy setting yet, it's safe to say that Chuck pissed the bed on that one.tongue

I really just don't get why everyone thinks Obama is the antichrist and will bring ruin and it wasn't like Clinton or FDR.

Is it because he's black? It probably is but still.

I've only seen one person claim that Obama is the antichrist seriously. I've been to relatively conservative baptist churches before, and the people there universally treated the notion as some kind of a joke (my pasture liked making fun of Baptist stereotypes).

As for Obama being the *snicker* antichrist, even if the end is nigh, Obama isn't even the best candidate among the people currently alive. Putin or Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi are both much better candidates than he is.

It was probably about him being black, a Democrat, a "socialist", and America's "first gay President".

But for everything he's done for gay rights, I know he did way more than Mccain or Romney would have done.

19 year old sentenced to be on sex offender registry for dating online.

He slept with a 14 year old who told him she was 17. Her mother defended him in court. He honestly thought she was above the age of consent.

But according to the judge and the prosecuter, their reason for sentencing him isn't because he accidentally slept with a minor. It's because they want to send a message that hooking up with people online is not ok. They're that crazy sex negative.

"Sending the message..."

<Sigh> This is a courtroom. It's not a PR agency. Why do people keep misusing stuff as a advocacy platform?

Also, it's sex offender registries and the age of consent too. Topics that invite idiocy of all kinds.

This is incredibly idiotic. The poor kid was deceived and had no idea of his sex partner's true age, but his life is going to be ruined by some judge who is more interested in sending a message to people who use dating sites than a punishment that fits the crime. Even the "victim" and her family are sticking up for the defendant, but the judge won't listen. What the fuck.

I hope the family can get an appeal hearing under a different judge, because it's clear this one is not remotely impartial. Paedophilia kinda squicks me out in general, but the line is a bit more blurry when it comes to teenagers, especially if they understand sex enough to actually be responsible about it.

So half our judges are willing to stick people on the sex offender registries for stupid reasons, and the other half will force male statutory rape victims to pay child support. God this country is screwed.

Besides, there's no way there won't be an appeal of sorts, right?

He'll probably be able to appeal to a higher court at least, cause this is just another example of how much a politicized circus the American judiciary is.

Paul Krugman makes an appearance on Bloomberg to pull no punches about Donald Trump: "He's a belligerent, loud-mouthed racist", and as such he perfectly represents the Republican party's primary voting bloc.

Krugman points out that, even though Romney was nominated in 2012, every candidate who briefly shot to the top of the polls did exactly the same thing as Trump: spoke loudly and angrily about everything that the racist right sees as wrong with America, before being quelled by the protests of the establishment. But the establishment has clearly lost all control of the party.

The GOP's primary voters desperately want someone like Trump who channels their frustration at an America that defies what they see as their core values.

Bernie is definitely advancing via a strategy of "tell it like it is", only his telling reflects something vaguely resembling a sound economic strategy. I can't make the claim that it better reflects the desires of the voters he's targeting, since Trump's demographic is composed of embittered racists who all imagine themselves to be millionaires.

Doesn't talking or even mentioning Trump just play into his hand? Wouldn't it be better to just stop talking about him altogether? After all no publicity is bad publicity so I figure the best way to ensure he doesn't make it past the primaries is by denying him any acknowledgment.

Of course that may also play into the fallacy that ignoring a problem makes it go away

You can ignore Trump, but you can't ignore the demographic that he represents, since it by and large owns the Republican primaries.
