Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I think we need to make moon colonies. And then admit the Moon into Statehood. And then turn around and then be like "Try to put the US on a map now!" and laugh.
Leviticus 19:34Because it's a bandwagon that they can jump on to make it look like they care. Same reason the Toyota Prius sold like wildfire in LA when there's always been way more economical and way more environmentally friendly cars on the market. But by buying a gimmicky hybrid car it looks like they give a shit about the environment.
"Yup. That tasted purple."@speedyboris: I was making a joke. Seriously...
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Whaat? Which are those? Toyota Prius are all the rage with taxi drivers here in Barcelona: every single one I've ridden with claims it lowered their fuel consumption by half, helping them dramatically increase their margin.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.Their fuel consumption is good but the manufacturing methods cause catastrophic damage to the environment. Especially the lithium mining and refining for their batteries.
Someone once did some math and figured out that if you factor in manufacturing a full sized Land Rover did less damage to the environment over the course of it's lifetime than a Prius despite drinking several times more fuel.
Oh really when?I do agree, though, that in general, celebrities are more concerned with their public image (IE, popularity) than stating their actual beliefs. So, one might support anti-vaxers in order to polish off their public image.
Leviticus 19:34Not enough sunlight energy over the surface area.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Nuclear cars, that's what we need.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Hydrogen costs fantastic amounts of energy to extract, store, and transport.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Solar cars are strictly possible, but not feasible for the kind of use we need.
I mean, this
◊ has a few...logistical concerns.
Basically. Hollywood is awful about New Agey garbage. See Scientology.

The entertainment industry (all over the world, not just Hollywood) tends to be superstitious and clings to weird beliefs. I've heard that it's due in part to the extremely unpredictable nature of whether a film/TV series will be successful, so the actors and other people in the industry develop habits and beliefs that gives them a sense of control (even if that control is just illusionary).

I always thought that the liberal social atmosphere required for vibrant artistic expression had something to do with it, as people in the industry often look to foreign and exotic cultures and aspects for inspiration or ideas (e.g Taoism and the Force in Star Wars). This is further fanned by the simple fact that many in the industry have enough money to frequently travel, allowing them to be exposed to foreign customs and thus take them in at greater levels than an average citizen.
And at the same time they are not necessarily any smarter than your average housewife (acting takes charisma, not brains), and as such are prone to believing the same stupid shit as everyone else. The only difference between a Hollywood anti-vaxxer and that housewife is that the Hollywood star has a ton of fans who believe what they say.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"

Can we move on to the next topic? This is all very speculative and the PR-ians aren't that interested. Plus whenever I read of hear the name Puerto Rico, that damned song kicks into my head.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
