The General US Politics Thread

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Anyone remember that Series/Babylon5 episode? The one with the kid that needed a lung operation that his parents' religion forbade?

@ Kostya: By punishment of infecting their parents with the disease the vaccination is supposed to be against?

[up][up] The parents have generally been vaccinated, unless its for something like Chicken Pox or Shingles where the vaccine is less than 15 years old.

Greenmantle: They're probably already vaccinated. I'd settle for taking the kid from them and giving it to parents that give a damn.

I'm confused why celebrities seem to be riding the anti-vax train so hard. It's not like they have anything to gain from it. They seem to genuinely believe it for some reason.

Just because Carrey is a massive dumbass doesn't mean you have to hate all of his work.

Dumbass people can make interesting things. I mean, just look at Orson Scott Card!

Well, looking back at Carrey's work, I think the only good movie he ever made was Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. Everything else I've seen from him has been garbage.

[up][up]I guess although I never thought Jim Carrey was hippie. It seems like some of them have just adopted it as their pet cause for some inexplicable reason. At least with things like Fox News or the Koch brothers they profit from doing stupid shit.

[up]The Truman Show was good.

Question? What are your thoughts on the US Annexing Puerto Rico? Do you think that would be a good idea for either place?

Personally, I want to see it happen just so I can laugh as 50-star flags drop hilariously in price.

Is it technically annexing if they're already a territory?

I have no strong opinions on it beyond being annoyed that all our flags and shit will have to be changed. How are we even going to do them with 51 stars?

Puerto Rico is already a U.S. possession, isn't it? How would "annexation" even be a thing that could happen? I'd like to see it made the 51st state, though.

I looked it up and annexing something involves adding it as an extra or subordinate part. Puerto Rico is already a territory so I don't think it would change that much under that definition. It would just be a different kind of subordinate part.

[up]edit:I actually do like this one. I wonder how much money it would cost to replace every single flag.

Like I said, I believe that statehood for Puerto Rico is a desirable and necessary goal for them to help them achieve political and economic parity with the rest of the nation of which they are a part.

Maybe but we shouldn't force them to do it.

Speaking of which have any of the other US territories expressed interest in becoming states? There's Guam, American Samoa, and I think another one whose name I can't remember. I never hear anything about them becoming the next state.

My biggest problem with adding a 51st state is that then every movie depicting future America would have to adjust the flags in them!

Although, since so many of them were depicting the futuristic world of year 2000, I guess it's fine.

It's not any weirder than futuristic movies depicting the Soviet Union still being around.

Puerto Rico has more population than some already admitted states....

EDIT- In Jim Carrey's defence, I believe in vaccination and I'm put off by Brown's legislation from a religious rights perspective, so disagreeing does not make one automatically anti-vaccination, regardless if Carrey is or not.

The quality of Jim Carrey's movies has nothing to do with his anti-vax tweets. I would think you of all people would know that.

[up][up]I think Jack is talking about places that aren't Puerto Rico. It's not that surprising they have low populations since all the candidates are islands.
