Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016My mother has been depressed all day long about the verdict. I politely pointed out that reasonable doubt is reasonable doubt, and that sometimes, a man can foolishly hand reasonable doubt over to his assailant. If you cross against the light and get struck by a car, the driver is not liable. If you draw blood from mall ninja, and he shoots you, he is also not liable.
I'm a skeptical squirrelAgain, Zimmerman is considered to be white. So no. Also, to even ask that question is ridiculous because there's thousands of cases like this and none of them seem to directly affect the level of black against hispanic or white violence. It just makes people really angry about the corrupt justice system. Mostly it seems to be inspiring protests rather than violence.
I also feel that as serious as this trial is, we're veering off topic a lot, so maybe we should try and redirect discussion of the Zimmerman trial as it relates to US politics. Which is the topic of the thread.

Where I am, The BBC are explicitly calling Zimmerman Hispanic. It's part of the reason I asked. I also did hear about the protests.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016The Democrats are really going to have to step up their game in regards to gubernatorial elections. The last few have been really, really lackluster. Perry won mostly because he barely had to try.
Seriously, there seems to be an organization problem with Democrats in my state. Also, Screw that Abbot guy.

"Fast cars"? Germany would be all BITCH PLEASE.
Anyway, I've been reading some news stories about the Zimmerman trial... all this talk of a "jury" makes me sick. Like it's a fucking game show or a figure-skating contest. Do they hold up score cards when the prosecution and defence lawyers make their cases?

Mache dich, mein Herze, rein...It's not so much the word as the whole system of trial by jury. I know it's all a lot more nuanced than it looks and there are all kinds of checks and balances in place, but I still associate it with mob justice.
Mache dich, mein Herze, rein...Most of Europe is doing just fine without jury trials, thank you very much. Nothing fundamental about it.
Mache dich, mein Herze, rein...

You're absolutely right, they did not do this. What they did was expose Martin's predispositions to aggressive behavior, making Zimmerman's version of events, in which Martin attacked him, plausible.
