Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Zimmerman himself isn't the problem so much as Florida laws are. Sorry Jovian, but so far the effective outcome of your state's legislations and attitude towards race and crime is that people of colour do not have the legal right to self-defense.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Oh hey, casual outside observer checking in.
So, we have a trigger-happy wannabe-Judge Dredd who killed a teenager on the street, after repeatedly being instructed by real law enforcement to leave the kid alone. And this man now goes free.
Not too long ago, certain provisions from the Voting Rights Act - something about extra measures in areas with a history of discrimination - were repealed. Have these people never heard of REDMAP and other gerrymandering and disenfranchisement efforts from the GOP?
Something tells me 2013 isn't a good year for race relations in the USA.

@Nettacki: They're bringing racism into it because racism is still a very serious issue in this country. Actively trying to suppress talk about racism in relation to anything is just a way to pretend racism doesn't exist. And pretending it doesn't exist makes it easy to ignore it when it happens.
That's more meta commentary on racism in this country as a whole rather than a comment on this specific case. Don't forget, people thought there were going to be riots over the decision in this case, all over the country in locations heavily populated by black people, in absence of any evidence of such.
In regards to the article: uh... huh. That's a sneaky kind of tactic there. Hoo boy.

@Nettacki
MSNBC is acting like a bunch of dumb-asses. When it comes to the Zimmerman case, their almost as bad as FOX news.

Or at least, the jury found that version of events plausible enough to conclude that there was reasonable doubt of Zimmerman's guilt. We don't know whether or not Zimmerman or Martin started the confrontation. That was the whole damn point of the trial.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.Well, on legitimate discussions of Florida politics then, when the hell are you getting a new governor?

He lost sight of Martin from inside his car. The dispatcher asked him which direction Martin had gone. Zimmerman got out of his car to figure out the answer to that question. When the dispatcher realized what was going on, he told Zimmerman not to follow Martin (to which Zimmerman replied "okay"). Depending on which version of events you believe, either Zimmerman kept following Martin anyway, or he was walking back to his car to wait for the police when Martin confronted him.
2014, hopefully. I friggen hate Rick Scott. He gutted a bunch of stuff in the name of fiscal responsibility and has been slowly adding things back (like the education budget), but we still aren't anywhere near pre-cut levels. It remains to be seen whether or not voters will buy Scott's inevitable "I've increased education budgets consistently for the past three years!" types of claims. He's done consistently poorly in polling against any sort of serious Democratic competition, though.
