Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The only problem, in my mind, with Stand Your Ground, is that it lowers the bar for justifiable homicide, which just really shouldn't be. Sometimes you're in a life-and-death situation and you have to kill someone to save yourself (or have reason to believe as much), but everyone should be legally obligated to exhaust non-lethal options first, because whether the one you end up killing was a completely worthless human or not, it is not our place to kill each other. It really shouldn't be.

And a completely different set of Americans would agree with him. That's irrelevant to whether or not the idea is valid.
And on a completely different note: Joesolo mentioned a few pages back about not finding any scholarships targeted at whites.
They're are plenty of scholarships that are aimed at people of Italian,Polish, English, German, Irish, French(insert other European peoples here) descent. And a few generic Caucasian ones exist as well. I don't have quantitative data, but they do exist and aren't hard to find.
Not to mention theres scholarships aimed specifically at the poor, too.
The main reason thgere arent many "white people" scholarships is white people tend to be assumed to be largely middle class. The ones that arent usually qualify for scholarships based on academia, sports, or just go for pell grants and student loans.
Aaaaand it doesnt help that theres at least a scholarship or two specifically for white people funded by hate groups..
And in other news, one oft-forgotten president is now 100
.
I call old Jerry the last decent Republican.

Wait, Gerald Ford is alive? Then why, when Obama was elected, did I see a picture of all the presidents from Carter to Obama that had a caption about them being all the currently living presidents?
edit: Why would you celebrate a person's 100th birthday if they're not currently alive?

Gerald Ford is dead. He died in 06.

I thought the reason people were up in arms was because Zimmerman was largely responsible for the conflict. Trayvon was not committing any crime when Zimmerman decided to follow him. Realizing he was being stalked, Martin approached Zimmerman. Events get cloudy but the end was result was a fight Martin was winning when he was shot.
Many, including myself, see Zimmerman's action (following Trayvon) as provocation. The law disagrees. I find it a case where what is legal and what is right are not on the same page.

Honestly, I'm of the opinion that whatever happened is what it is. A jury of people who were not necessarily all automatically in favor of Zimmerman were shown all the information and all the arguments of the defense and the prosecution, and they made the informed decision that Zimmerman was not guilty of the charges that were brought against him.
Some of us may not be happy with the outcome, but it can't be said to have been a sham trial or that justice wasn't done. It definitely wasn't a stacked jury of any sort, and the jurors are way better informed than we are, seeing as they were given all available information on this case and it was discussed at length.
Some of us might not be happy with the verdict, but justice as defined by our society was upheld on that basis.
I have no doubt that Zimmerman thought he was doing the right thing. The number of stupid deaths caused by people who think they're doing the right thing are the reason we have laws to prevent those stupid deaths. In Florida, they had laws to enable them instead.
I'll leave
a
few
◊ thoughts
and that'll be all I have to say on the Martin case. I would like to warn people against arguing on unrelated topics such as affirmative action on this thread, as not only are those off topic, but also there are some very in depth threads on those exact topics lurking around the forum. They can be recovered with "search forum titles" and read or necroed.
Pretty much this. The whole reason the court system exists is because we can't just go with our gut instinct and common sense on this sort of thing.
Also see; the Lyndie Chamberlain case in Australia.
We may have to revisit how justice is defined by our society.
Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.Well, when your police department doesn't even bother to investigate until someone gets shot...
Also, this is a country where police response times usually clock in at 15+ minutes when they show up at all.
Also because those scholarships are affirmative action designed to pull disproportionately poor demographics out of poverty. Whites aren't disproportionately poor.

Fair enough. We could crack jokes about Cleveland instead.

No civilian should be allowed to carry a loaded weapon outside of his house
Florida gun law would disagree with you.
