Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@Joesolo, so you are offened by being called cracker? I just ask because I once got into this rather long "debate"(argument) about whether ANY white people find the term offensive. Long story short, I argue it shouldn't be used becasue it's a hate word, even if it's not on the same "level" as "nigger", and I get told to fuck off for being to sensitive (is black ironically enough).
I think what happened to your family should probably be more chalked up to police incompetence than anything else.
Edit: Also, would you WANT a scholarship based on race? You don't sound like the type of person who would (neither am I). You don't honestly sound like you have a chip on your shoulder though.

because they said they were for african american men?

Hell no! the very idea of it offends me! especially given one was in honor of Martin Luther King Jr, himself, who would probably be disgusted at the idea. he, after all, had "a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."

I'm baaaaaaack‘Millions For Trayvon’: New Black Panther Party Calls for Protests on Twitter
@ Taira Mai, two pages back.
I said before, the US, from a PR perspective, is just getting a very raw deal in regards to the Egypt situation, due to the need to appease whoever appears to have the proverbial "Mandate of Heaven" at the moment. Thus they (we?) end up looking like military-dictator puppetmasters, friends of radical islam, and coup-abetters all at the same time.
So am I allowed to break into the discussion on the Zimmerman case to bring this up?
I realize of course that it's Fox News but wow. Just, wow.
Al Sharpton responds to Zimmerman's acquittal.

That's screwed up.

I'd reply but the flame war'd be worse than the trayvon one...
(hasn't read yet) oh this should be good.
(has now read) I was expecting worse.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Around the time of Newtown, I got into a Facebook debate about abortion. A friend of a friend basically accused me of having no problem with the Newtown murders because I was pro-choice. After hinting, rather strongly that I didn't appreciate that, I did the Facebook equivalent of storming out of the room.
I will say there's such a thing as black on black racism too — between African-Americans and African immigrants.
By the way, The BBC are explicitly calling Zimmerman Hispanic.

Keep Rolling On
and Afro-Caribbeans, which mostly seems to be caused by the latter two buying into negative stereotypes of American Blacks and the former believing the other two are "less civilized" among other things.
But, I have heard people lament about how the American-born children of african and caribbean immigrants more often than not identify more with American blacks.

x6 & 5 Well that's no-brainer, my dad told me back in the 70s for instance. there was a lot of friction between Jamaicans and African-Americans due to the latter feeling that the former were running them out of jobs. (Leading to surprise when people found out my dad was Jamaican because he came here when he was young.)

Hugging a Vanillite will give you frostbite.

@Joe- It seems like you have some personal issues with black people...Maybe you should work that out before you start debating..
