Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

it is disgusting the people celebrating that he died, or saying he deserved ot. A kid died who shouldn't have, no matter your take on this is' a terrible thing.

Read the new york times one.
Funny, huh? anyone else know he was a volunteer at a community organization, and personally took in two african american kids for a while after a program providing for them shut down?

I'm baaaaaaack
rollin' on dubs
Congress always goes after military bennies and then walks it back. The IRS scandal won't be a side show if the IRS was after you. Of course some wanted to fan the flames, it's a nice distraction. As much as the other side wants to paint Zimmerman as some kind of hero when he's just a fat wannabe cop. Had Martin been a real thug instead of a wannabe, Zimmerman would've been dead. There were no heroes in this one.
While the US media was so focused on a non-story, the world is burning.
I do hope he gets sued before we have an epidemic of stupid mall ninjas thinking they can walk around with a loaded weapon.

I tried to walk like an Egyptian and now I need to see a Cairo practor....
The IRS shit is a sideshow because the primary people screaming about being victimized ended up not even victiomized. nevermind they SHOULD HAVE, because getting the tax benefitsd they wanted while being explicitly political in nature is ILLEGAL
its only a scandal in the sense republicans are whining that they got disproportionately targeted for doing something that techically was illegal anyhow.

No riots yet. I'm starting to feel confident.
Again, 'Stand Your Ground' laws were not involved in this case.
I agree with the man on this.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Stand your ground may not have been part of the court proceedings, but the law is part of the scandal in general. Such a law deserves severe scrutiny, considering they were considering using it in this case at all.
Also, the IRS thing is a non-scandal the Republicans latched onto simply because they hate taxes and the IRS makes a convenient public enemy.
I'd also like to point out racism is much more than a simple white dudes hating on black dudes. Zimmerman isn't all that Hispanic (I keep seeing White Hispanic as an option on forms, btw) and basically went after the kid full force. It's an unfortunate case that just because he takes in a couple black kids doesn't mean that racism wasn't a factor in his going after the Martin kid.
Yeah, I agree. People are acting like if we throw out race the case is meaningless. I mean even if it was 2 white people the fact is, someone still got killed for dubious reasons. The reason why it's such a big deal is because to black people, this case is very meanigful. White people just don't understand the (rightful) mistrust that black people have for the justice system. I hate to keep bringing up Dave Chappelle, but he has a bit where he talks about his white friend who went up to a police officer high, asked for directions, and wasn't arrested. To black people that is unbelievable. Black people have been and are profiled by the police and others regularly and this case really brought it to the forefront.
Zimmerman Attorneys React To Verdict: ‘It Was A Little Bit David And Goliath, But We Won’
X4 Yeah, being Hispanic is independent of race. Most Mexicans and Cubans in the country identify as white.
And I find it interesting that if all that information about Zimmerman is true, the media wouldn't explain, or maybe racializing the situation was better for ratings.
As other people have said even if Zimmerman didn't use stand your ground as his defense, it's effects in the state, both racial and non-racial are enough reason for it to be changed or scrapped.
Edit: Also, why do celebrities insist on voicing their opinions to the entire world, and why do so many people act like they're so much more important than all the rest of ours?

because our culture is fucking insane, thats why.
if we continue the tpics I'll go into detail, with more profanities. for starters, how the fuck does a porn tape get to make your whole family famous?

I'm baaaaaaackBecause celebrities have fans who value their opinions very highly. The merit of such is highly dubious, but that's how getting and maintaining social influence happens.
Anyway, the case was racial once it was known a white dude killed a black kid. You can't have that as the situation and not have the race question asked quite seriously. We may be better than we were, but we're not beyond racism yet. Not by a long shot.
about as safe as the white guy?
I have an uncle who was beat half to death by some black guys from some "rainbow coalitition" in broad daylight for not hiring them "off the books" on a constructin site. None of the fuckers was ever caught.
A white girl in my neighborhood was assaulted by about 4 black girls in a park a few years ago, none of them were caught either.
My dad does work in the projects to fix AC units. he's literally making these peoples lives more comfortable and he's harassed, called cracker, and had a guy steal his truck.
Racism is not targeted towards any one group.

Oh no. My point is that if you live in the inner city, watching your back constantly is pretty much your everyday life. Cops dont care about you and gangs are everywhere.
and frankly? Its great that your dad does that, but maybe consider that the fact he has the kind of money necessary to learn how to fix air conditioners and not be stuck living in the projects probably doesnt help.

fuck that, you should live my life. been harassed by black guys in school every year of my life and called cracker and stuff more times than I can count.

He didn't magically have that money. He worked for it since he was 16, and he didn't pay for training by himself, he worked for companies and was trained that way. and he did that WITHOUT FUCKING SCHOLARSHIPS DESIGNATED FOR HIS RACE.
Can I just tell you how much it pisses me off that 90% of the scholarships that were at my college were for a specific race? mostly lack, some hispanic? There wasn't one I could get. not ONE. Nothing for the italian kid who wants to do software. nope. black guy guy get any number of them for anything, not ONE I could.

I'm baaaaaaackAttorney Mark O’Mara: ‘If George Zimmerman Was Black, He Would Never Have Been Charged With A Crime’

You do realize 1 and 2 of those are completely fucking meaningless political sideshows as well, right?
and that 3 is more an issue of the republican half of congress being stupid than anything else.
