The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

generally lots of yelling

This explanation works every time.

I've also since learned that the people who aren't yelling can sometimes be the villains too.

@Barkey: The main concern I have is that between the police not doing a thorough investigation after it happened, and the media circus that got involved, the whole trial is turning into a farce. If I had to call it, I'd say that Zimmerman is going to walk on a technicality.

Is there a chance he'll get convicted of a lesser charge, such as manslaughter instead of murder or assault instead of manslaughter or murder?

[up] I don't think so. They tried to offer Zimmerman a plea bargain (where he'd plead guilty for a lesser charge), and he's still pleading "not guilty".

I don't know, we'll see if my friends are eating crow by tomorrow if he does walk. I'll be the one who called it.

I think that's what's going to happen. I also want to see if all these scary riots everyone is talking about actually happen, which I also doubt.

[up] I don't know about full on riots, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if we see an increase in racially motivated violence afterwards.

I'd almost bet on more than a few black people being understandably pissed off and then getting shot dead by other people thanks to stand your ground. Then again, I'm a cynic.

If a clear for Zimmerman sets precedent then it's effectively open season on young black men in Florida. (The law is blatantly selectively enforced.)

Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.

so in other racial news, once more the magic of americans knowing jack shit about asians allowed an intern to sneak this list of names onto the air as the named of the dead pilots of the asiana flight.

If the judge instructs the jury to consider manslaughter as a "lesser included charge" to murder, the jury might convict on that. (Failure to do so was blamed for that Texas guy who got off on killing an escort for not having sex with him; the prosecution's case wasn't strong enough to prove premeditated murder, and the judge didn't instruct that the jury could opt for the lesser included charge.)

I don't get why his reason was admissible at all. He's calling himself an idiot for not being able to reign in his impulses. Tons of men work with women and while they might have some sort of attraction for them, the smart ones don't act on it if it will only have bad results.

because a lot of people in the US are stupid enough to think Men truly are incapable of holding in our impulses and women should be blamed for tempting us.

The courts reason for why it was legal seems really flawed, "Oh, he hired another woman, so he couldn't possibly have been sexist."

The abortion bill which was filibustered last month has now been passed in the Texas Senate and is heading towards Perry's desk where it will be signed into law.
