The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So what does that mean? There's now direct government oversight of how these companies operate?

Don't be obtuse. The demonym for a person from the United States is "American". The demonym for someone from Mexico is "Mexican". Like it or not.

And the demonym for a person from America is still "American". Every Mexican is an American, like you or not.

Yes, I understand your point and I am nitpicking. But lordnyx was probably just making a joke, not need to call him obtuse. Specially because he is not wrong.

Apparently it means those groups are now under the Supervision of the Federal Reserve.

I think Fighteer's point is that nobody means Mexicans or Canadians when they say "American". If they did they'd say North Americans or some equivalent. While they are technically Americans they're not generally called that in general speech. It's like how the term "Asian" generally refers only to East Asians despite Indians, Russians, and Arabs also being native to the continent.

edit: As an aside that's partly why I prefer the term Oriental but I'm told that's considered offensive so I generally avoid using it.

[up]Not really that surprising. Libertarians are generally big proponents of secession.

Occono: I didn't know that. Makes sense though since they had a history of colonizing the region while America primarily dealt with China and Japan.

[up][up]Reminds me of the time Greece accidentally banned video games. I assume that will either be changed or nobody will care and business will go one as usual.

[up][up][up]I guess it was too much to ask to wait until the next election year before embarrassing ourselves again.

Also, for a political party that claims to be about freedom and small government, the GOP sure likes to ban things.

Okay I didn't think about this before but now it occurred to me. What is wrong with internet cafes? I'm ticking off a list of things that typically get conservatives up in arms and I can't think of anything internet cafes are doing.

You can use internet cafes to go to gambling websites.

Kostya (Unlucky Thirteen)
#57965: Jul 9th 2013 at 8:55:53 PM

You can also do that with libraries and home computers.

Wouldn't it be a better idea to ban gambling websites?

edit: Why does it even matter if you can go on gambling sites? I hate gambling but I don't think it should be illegal.

Basically the ban was a hastily and shittily put together attempt to further ban places that tried to use the front of an internet cafe to gamble online.

That doesn't really address:

1. Why you don't just ban gambling online.

2. Why is it even a big deal?

@Kostya: The GOP is the party of being free to do whatever your corporate sponsors want you to do, of course! Why would you want to do anything else, citizen? Are you a *gasp* SOCIALIST?

That really answers neither of those questions.

1:Can a state even do that? Either way, it seems like it'd be much harder.

2:Nobody really knows.

[up]It would be harder but at least it might stand a chance of accomplishing something. Somehow I doubt a person frequents an internet cafe if they just want to gamble.

It's even better than accidentally banning computers and smartphones.

Race is what's ultimately going to sink any larger ambitions Rand Paul might have. Whatever moderate libertarian tendencies may make him a possible mainstream darling, things like his disavowal of the Civil Rights Act (even though the Act does trample all over states' rights and the freedoms of private enterprise, it does these things for a very good reason) would make it utterly impossible for him to gain national traction
