Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@occono: It's the Journal Sentinel. Half the time they're being shills for Walker's government, and the other half they're putting out semi-decent articles. And of the articles which are even remotely controversial, you can bet dollars to donuts that it's going to have a lot of republicans trolling the comments section. It got that way during the protests in 2011 when there was a massive need to downplay public opinion about the union busting, despite the massive scale of the protests.
You can also find some real gems of comments there. I once saw someone say that a police officer, fire fighter, and EMT does not "deserve" to be middle class, only Police chiefs, Chief fire fighters, and surgeons. :V
Very big Daydream Believer. "That's not knowledge, that's a crapshoot!" -Al Murray "Welcome to QI" -Stephen FryOr possibly they don't understand what the middle class actually is.

I see. It was the most recent news article I could find on google on the choking incident. Any idea if there have been further developments?

DumboNope. The places I follow have not talked about it in months and I had almost forgotten about it.
And I wasn't saying that that article was the shilling half, just that you could expect those kinds of comments for the majority of the articles.
Very big Daydream Believer. "That's not knowledge, that's a crapshoot!" -Al Murray "Welcome to QI" -Stephen FryQuestion, though I'm sure this has been brought up before, why does whether or not people who don't "deserve" some benefit trump the people who do "deserve" it, in the minds of many conservatives? It seems that even if the program could also benefit themselves and their friends and families, who most would dub as deserving as well as a host of others, many would want to completely destroy them, if even one person tried cheating it, food stamps and welfare being prime examples. What is with this obesssion of not giving things to "moochers" even if it means taking everyone else down with them?
House Republicans look to slash IRS budget by $3 billion in fiscal 2014
@KBSL: That particular brand of conservatism has at its core an idealized concept of personal responsibility in which a moral individual does not rely on assistance from government and only accepts private charity in direst need. All success in life derives from gumption and hard work, whereas all failure derives from laziness and lack of ambition.
Correspondingly, it is the greatest sin to take the product of a person's honest labor and give it to someone who did not work as hard.
This is, at heart, a very idealistic philosophy. It's blatantly contrary to fact, but it has a powerful appeal.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016They've held 37 votes or some such to repeal it, yes. They continue to attempt to defund and obstruct it in any way possible.
One is forced to wonder why they fear it so much. If they really thought it would turn people against Democrats, why not let it go into effect and then call, "I told you so?"
The answer is because they know that a successful implementation of Obamacare might permanently remove any chance of them regaining the White House.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Leonard Nimoy : Immigration reform is logical
By that logic, why don't the Democrats let the Republicans intact every bad law they have ever thought up?
The answer, is that they are afraid it will cause to much damage to the country.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Pfft. They won't surrender until their demographic base dries up completely. But a successful implementation would take the wind out of any public outcry against the law, making it much harder for a Congressman to justify a vote against it to their constituents.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Once people start getting the benefits, anyone who tries to go against it will look insane.
There was a new candidate for MP in my area (Yes, I live in Canada, this is actually relevant) a couple years back who was a tea party conservative immigrant from the States. His platform was to try and get the healthcare rolled back. Anyone who actually heard about him just thought he was crazy and the Conservative Party just refused to endorse him and he eventually gave up.
Once people realize that the costs for going to the doctor will be much lower, I don't think anyone with half a brain would want it to stop.

Two House Democrats have proposed legislation to establish national park on the moon
Now, what does anybody think will happen once Obamacare rolls out? I am assuming that there will be some bureaucratic blunders and usual problems that tend to affect new megaprojects.

A new survey finds only 12 percent support implementing ObamaCare’s individual mandate in 2014 as prescribed by law.
