The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up][up]Yeah, Obama's worst state was Utah, and a lot of that probably had to do with Romney being Mormon.

Of course, I also think that it was his worst state in 2008 too, so it's probably a distinction without much difference.

@Kark

I was actually thinking more dissolution than succession. And who says it's the south that secedes. Maybe the North decides to jump ship. Who knows?

And honestly, if someone pointing out the (largely true) cultural division between different regions of the country, without any negative or positive assigned to either side, pisses someone off, let them be pissed.

@Ace

My bad, then.

I honesty didn't see the part about bombing. Or if I did it didn't register. That is, obviously, quite beyond the pale.

I thought we were discussing an amicable dissolution.

Utah is America's most conservative state.

Wyoming takes 2nd place.

Pretty sure Alabama is second. In terms of actual conservatism. Wyoming is more libertarian-minded, but just not Dem-friendly.

But, I've been under the impression that the top 1% even if they have a much lower tax rate still pay most of the country's taxes just by the fact they own so much of the country's money and most of them live in blue states (especially California and New York)

Sort of. If you restrict yourself to individual income tax, the rich have been paying more of that of late, by sheer virtue of having unprecedentedly large amounts of money and unprecedentedly large numbers of lower earners being so low as to get tax credit at the end of the year.

If you look at revenue on the whole though, you see that income tax has kept a fairly consistent proportion of our revenue since the 1950's. What happened is that high-end corporate and excise taxes — formerly about half our total revenue — got almost entirely replaced with low-end payroll tax. So if you look at all sources of revenue, the rich are paying less of it than they ever have.

Quick question: What's the difference between income tax and payroll taxes? Are the latter things like social security, medica(id? re?) taxes, and such?

[up]

Income taxes are a once a year thing based on total income.

Payroll tax gets assesed on every paycheck you're ever given.

(whats that, most rich people dont get paychecks, they get capital gains?)

Typically, income tax is what you pay at the end of the year, and gets adjusted for how much you actually have after deducting off living expenses and other stuff. Payroll tax gets chunked off your paycheck before you ever see it, and tends to be considerably less sensitive to silly things like rent and food.

Here's a good graph illustrating that. Note that the rich pay almost no payroll tax.

[up] And yeah, that's why. Capital gains taxes are typically lumped under either individual income or corporate, depending on the details of the transactions. The former hasn't changed all that much, and the latter has almost completely dropped off the map.

I was wondering what happened in the Wisconsin Supreme Court choking case.

Turns out the conservative wing of the court refuses to hear the case, and so....nothing is happening in the case because, it's the supreme court and there's no-one to appeal it to. Um, so, what would happen if her murdered her then and no-one allowed a case or investigation like this?...

The comments are calling justice bradley a liberal liar.
