Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Dick Cheney's daughter eyes Senate bid in Wyoming
Posting aggressive opinions on a potentially controversial topic and then bailing when people start to get involved in responding does not strike me as very intellectually honest.
And the Zimmerman trial has EVERYTHING to do with politics because of its relation to the Stand Your Ground law. It's a direct example of how the laws enacted by the people we choose to elect affect the people. I don't see how it could possibly be more related to politics.
If the mods decide that it's not worth discussing in the same vein as other banned topics then, of course, we can stop talking about it, but it does seem to be perfectly on-topic.

Furthermore, I think Guantanamo must be destroyed.Looks like Rick Perry is retiring
It's not necessarily unique so much as it is an important symbol of an overall problem
with the law. It's a rallying point, and heavily related to our overall mentality in dealing with firearms in the US.

Furthermore, I think Guantanamo must be destroyed.Perry could stand a chance in 2016 if he focused on finding a cogent immigration solution that appeases legal Latino immigrants and isn't decried by the stricter groups as "Amnesty." Pushing these Texas and Florida folks onto the national stage is entirely based on their ability to better play with the Hispanics.
I have to wonder, though. Do we think it is time for Rand Paul to make his move? Or should be spend another presidential term focused on proving his value-credentials?
The Zimmerman trial is related to politics precisely because the general public as well as many political activists see this as a political issue. Stand Your Ground laws and gun violence are major controversies closely linked to the case.
So I don't see why it shouldn't be discussed here. I don't know if there is another active thread for discussing it, though.

Currently, there are 3 Republican's vieing for governor and noone else at the moment. They are:
Larry Kilgore
: A Texas sessionist whose motto is "Secession! All other issues can be dealt with later" and legally changed his middle name to SECEDE. No, seriously.
Tom Pauken
: Former chairman of the Texas Republican Party, former member and chairman of the Texas Workforce Commission, and served on Regan's White House Staff.
Miriam Martinez: former Univision talk-show host who ran an unsuccessful campaign in Texas House District 41 last year.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Kilgore just sounds insane. Secession is not a good idea. The only reason it worked at all in places like Russia is because those countries were practically independent anyway as the central Russian government couldn't afford to keep to close an eye on them. Texas enjoys a lot of influence in the states, warranted or not, and they would lose that, trade would fall apart, and just watch Texas go completely bankrupt if they secede.
It's similar to the reasons why Quebec separating from Canada would be a horrible idea.

I hope they realize that America wouldn't exactly let them go quietly. Our first action would probably be to declare them a traitor and proceed to occupy them. Texas doesn't really have a standing army so they couldn't effectively fight back if it came to that.
edit: It would probably also crash the world economy which would hurt them immensely and that's not even getting into the trade embargoes the US would force the UN to impose on them.

Rick Perry has apparently set up a mechanism that forces businesses seeking state permissions to fund the incumbent Governor's election campaigns - or something along these lines.
Based on that, Perry would have won re-election in 2014 if he had run.
