Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I was getting sick of that shit in Florida. People would just stride into the middle of the main drag, which had a 55 mph speed limit.
I try to be uber mindful when I drive, but when I'm on foot I ain't crossing the street unless it's absolutely empty and clear of cars for the most part, or I can make eye contact with stopped drivers at the intersection, using a stop light or a crosswalk.
Only thing more obnoxious is bicyclists using the left lane... You aren't a car, use the fucking crosswalk instead of holding up traffic you asshat.
RE: using the phone while driving.
I think that the problem isn't so much with having a conversation while driving as it is holding a phone while driving. You only have two hands - you can't control the wheel, shift gear and hold a phone to your ear all at the same time. Even just having something in your hand stops you from properly holding the wheel or gear stick. That's why a hands-free device is often seen as a lesser offence.

And let us pray that come it may (As come it will for a' that)Jaywalking was really bad where I live until the police station put a few rookie cops on patrol. They arrested about 40 people in a day for jaywalking and people stopped. It was a really stupid place to jaywalk too. The highway exits really close, and it's a really major street.
I'm Canadian, and yes, it's a crime here.

Well I think, as the Wikipedia article notes, you have to also redesign the roads to actually have roughly 20 mph speed limits (effectively or forcefully), or else you're just juxtaposing fast traffic with pedestrians.
And I think, to the chagrin of those of us when we drive, there are laws prohibiting bikers from using the sidewalk, at least in some jurisdictions (such as New York City).
^ Wait, jaywalking is a crime in the United States?

considering the US tends to have speeds of 30-40 intown (except on side roads) yeah..Jaywalking can be a bit..Not recommanded.
especially since a lot of drivers in the US have a massive entitlement complex about people walking even across crosswalks anyhow

Technically it is illegal in NYC, but your chances of getting in trouble for it are fairly low unless it's particularly egregious.
Hugging a Vanillite will give you frostbite.Even where it's legal jaywalking can be pretty stupid. Though when your motorbike has just dropped its chain in between two lanes on a 70mph road you often don't have much join, those things are expensive.
I motorbike so phone rules aren't really a think for me, I guess I could use my phone while ridding if I hooked everything up right (I use it as a GPS at times), but seeing as everyone's already out to get me I'd rather not.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranAt worst it would be a misdemeanor. "Felony jaywalking" would be a rather odd concept.

I mean, seriously, our country (I'm a native U.S. citizen) sometimes appears to be built on the philosophy that everyone can, one day, get everything they want.
Well, to be fair, the U.S. is a relatively young country, and in much of our past, especially in the "pioneer" past, we were relatively unconstrained by resources such as land/space, water, (clean) air, minerals in the ground, and energy resources (be it trees or coal or whatever), and from them, we could relatively easily just strike it rich out somewhere where people hadn't been yet, so after a while of hard work and some (to be honest, a LOT of) luck, it was actually somewhat possible.
(Also, the winners get to tell their stories.)
But reality these days dictates that we don't live in those days anymore, and that we're a lot more resource-constrained than we once thought we were, both environmentally and financially. And that's why we're fighting each other over resources.
These problems will be solved to some extent by using our resources more efficiently — such as wasting less money, energy, water, etc. — but at some point we're going to have to learn how to make do with less.
And of course, having to make do with less raises lots of fairness questions, as those of us who are less well-off see the conspicuous consumption and/or hoarding behaviors of those of us who are more well-off, and feel quite reasonably resentful.

I think I'm cool with our speed limits, to be honest. Just don't use crosswalks unless it's a red light.
That's how crosswalk buttons here work, it prioritizes making thru traffic of that junction stop, with the exception of people making right turns. For them you just have to make sure that you can look at their car and try to make eye contact, just to make sure they see you.

How much money does he have? (No: serious question — if he buys Swiss citizenship, he's golden.)
Switzerland may do it for the publicity, if there's a feeling they need to brush up the neutrality image in a big way and it's unlikely to hit the bottom line too grievously. Or, he outright buys entrance: you buy the paper, they'll back you up to the hilt, regardless. <shrugs>

Wasn't Russia's offer withdrawn?
EDIT: Oh, other way around. Snowden turned it down because he wasn't willing to put up with their condition of stopping.
