Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Also, a story highlighting the importance of downballot and local races: remember that politics isn't just about electing the President and Congress!
Barkey never replied, but while I can't confirm it, allegedly he did have an extensive criminal record of assault, drug possession and theft. So while it's hearsay he's not getting called a gangbanger just because of the photos.

I'll believe it when I see corresponding evidence.
How to fight for voting rights
post-Shelby County v. Holder. Very interesting: we can stonewall the voter disenfranchisement laws via lawsuits. Just because Section 5 is gone and the laws are no longer automatically checked doesn't mean that citizens can't force them to the point of review via private litigation.
Via Right Wing Watch: Phyllis Schafly is being a creep.
She added that Latinos “come from a country where they have no experience with limited government. And the types of rights we have in the Bill of Rights, they don’t understand that at all, you can’t even talk to them about what the Republican principle is.”

Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.@Joeyjoe: I have no clue where the frakk you got "history of assault, possession, and theft" from. This is from the wikipedia page on his shooting:

Litigation takes time. Damage will be done.
DumboHe was suspended from school for maybe robbing somebody? Thank God this criminal mastermind is no longer a threat to upstanding citizens then! With his hoodie and his Skittles.
Come to think about it... I used to hand my jewellery (earrings, watch, medical bangle, cross pendant necklace) to my brother to shove into his gym bag when I had to take it all off to do gymnastics (medical bangles are great, but you don't want to be doing the asymmetric bars with them on). My theory was simple: his was less likely to be searched diligently for jewellery by an optimistic thief thanks to the nature of his socks. It'd sometimes take me hours to remember to get it all off him.
Did that make him a thief, then?

Don't forget it he had iced tea with him. No doubt to refresh himself after a long night committing crime.
@ occono: Better than nothing. Besides, we need to get this lot on their back heel.

Barkey, say sorry.
No.
Don't want to be treated like a walking stereotype? Don't dress like one and flash pictures of weed and guns. Don't act like a gangbanger if you aren't one and nobody will ever assume you are one. It's kind of like if living down here I wore knee-high white socks, shaved my head, wore a white wifebeater and khaki shorts pulled up, and had a thick mustache. Most regular folk would be immediately rather suspicious of me right off the bat for that. Doing shit like that is like saying "Hey look, be suspicious of me!"
In other news,
I really want to like Tammy Duckworth after this. Too bad she's an Illinois senator who supports the Brady Campaign. Instead she just gets a courteous nod of respect for what she's gone through and for managing to still be rather bad ass despite me disagreeing with her politics.

^^Pity that it's too small an issue to come up for a vote.
