The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up][up]Why don't we just "invade their countries, kill their leaders, and convert them to Christianity"? Or better yet, someone politely inform Mr. "Bomb bomb Iran" that he lost the election.

Ecuador's own human rights record is fairly dubious too. The problem is that the law has forced Snowden to seek refuge in such places.

@Barkey: I wish. A defense has been used (fortunately, very few juries are going to believe it, but it's there) referred to as "urban survival." Or in other words, "if a reasonable person would believe his life was in imminent danger based on the circumstances, he has a right to shoot first."

And yes, courts have upheld this, at least in the context of bringing sociologists into the courtroom to bamboozle the jury.

Apparently there are pictures of Martin with a gun or marijuana. This apparently makes you a gangbanger if you're black. If you're white it makes you a member of the Ron Paul Revolution.

(Y'all do remember that this is Florida, where a black woman who fired a warning shot to scare off her abusive husband - didn't even hit anyone - is facing jail time? And SYG is doing fuck-all to protect her?)

Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.

While not exactly politics related, I figured this might be the best thread for it, since it happened in Arizona and all.

'Perfect storm' wildfire raging in Arizona claims 19 men in elite unit

As the title says, 19 firefighters out of a group of 20 were killed battling the blaze in Arizona earlier today. This is the single biggest loss of firefighters since September 11th. Not too many details have been released yet about the exact circumstances, but from what little is known (or gossiped - not sure, really) it wasn't the flames themselves that killed them, but rather the smoke and lack of oxygen. While trying to set up a safety area for them to fall back on, the fire managed to jump ahead of their position and block their escape; the unfortunate result was that they couldn't find an exit in time and suffocated to death.

Damn, not a good way to go...sad

[up]Relevant to that....

"He wants another stimulus, he wants to hire more government workers. He says we need more fireman, more policeman, more teachers. Did he not get the message of Wisconsin? The American people did. It’s time for us to cut back on government and help the American people," Romney says.

[up]I... take it Romney was blissfully unaware of the contradiction in his statement of a while ago? If you don't hire the people specialised to look after people... how can the American people look after themselves? tongue

Not everybody is cut out to be one of those 19, for instance (may they rest in peace: they earned it the hard way).

[up][up]Okay, that statement is just ignorant. How are the future generations going to compete with other countries with less teachers? How are the streets going to be safe without policemen? And especially, who would be dumb enough to say they need less firemen. The average person would have no idea what to do when a fire happens. Yes, sometimes there are fires no one can do anything about. Some areas get them every year. But we need a fire department for all the fires that can be stopped.

GlennMagusHarvey Since: Jan, 2001
#57447: Jul 1st 2013 at 11:02:04 AM

Also, there's a difference between professional firefighting (with lots of equipment and vehicles and even air support) and people simply filling buckets from the faucet themselves.

We have different people specializing in different activities in our society for a reason. Because it's far easier to train a team of dedicated firefighters than to somehow distribute a theoretical little piece of firefighting capacity to everyone.

And frankly, that's why the idea of "everyone looks out for only themselves" anti-collectivism is stupid. Divided, we fall; united, we stand.

The sad truth about where Snowden has retreated to is this: Every nation that is "free" and has a good human rights record, also bends at the knee for the USA. There isn't a single country that both embraces free speech and wouldn't extradite Snowden back to the US in a heartbeat. The only one I can think of may be the Netherlands, but even that is dubious.

That angle really exposes a rather shitty truth of world relations. The only people who wouldn't bend the knee for us and send Snowden back are people we're actively yelling at on a regular basis for being assholes themselves.

Now don't get me wrong, I do love my country in a weird abusive way, but I'm very sick of the sanctimonious bullshit our government spews. "Defenders of the free world" just doesn't particularly apply to us. We're not that much more moral than most firstworld nations, and I'm ok with that. The thing is, I get sick and fucking tired of us acting like we are, because that isn't very truthful.

Edward Snowden 'applies for asylum in Russia' ...if, in the words of Vladimir Putin:

"If he wants to stay here, there is one condition: He must stop his activities aimed at inflicting damage on our American partners, no matter how strange it may sound coming from my lips."
