The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Also FWIW Wendy Davis had to contend with a lot more rules and restrictions then a federal filibuster requires.

On the immigration issue, Senate votes 68-32 to end debate on immigration; 4 p.m. final vote

Another thing is that this is being run in a special session of the Texas senate, called when one of the Democratic state senators was away for the funeral of a close family member, and thus subject to different rules. Basically, Governor Goodhair was trying to pull a fast one during a period that, IIRC, state senators are supposed to be on vacation.

EDIT: BTW, Braeburn?

That would be horrible for assimilation effort.
Then fuck assimilation. Seriously. You're not going to get cultural homogeneity if you don't have a functioning immigration system anyways - creating a poor underclass guarantees division. You also don't need to encode assimilation into immigration laws, as there's extensive pressure and incentives already in place to accomodate your new home. There is a tremendous amount of complaining by Latin grandparents all over the Americas about how anglo their grandchildren in the U.S. have become.

If you have to choose between prosperity and cultural assimilation? Prosperity any day of the week and twice on Sundays please.

Which is really funny, because the vast majority of my friends up here have smoked pot, and none of them have gone on to do harder stuff.

Caution: the plural of "anecdote" is not "statistics".

However, I don't think it's necessarily hypocritical to be against the ROUTINE use of the filibuster, but not against the OCCASIONAL usage of it. The issue with the filibuster's unpopularity at the federal level is largely because it's been used more and more and more with each passing year, hitting a fevered peak with the Republicans stonewalling everything, including routine legislation, in the past few years. If they hadn't been abusing it so much, most people wouldn't care about the filibuster one way or the other. By contrast, the Texas filibuster is an exceptional circumstance in a special session that was explicitly called to ram unpopular legislation through - the environment is pretty much the opposite of the one the national filibuster takes place in.

Exactly why the filibuster should be restored to its original and hardcore level. If you want to make a filibuster, GET UP AND SPEAK AND KEEP SPEAKING.

Two votes short of the majority they wanted.

Now it's the House's time to operate, and so far they are at the "only with the majority of the majority" and "Chirping Crickets" stage.

@Radical

The Irish, Italian, and German immigrants assimilated and the Immigration System was as broken then as it is was toady (if not more so).

Christine Lagarde, the managing director of the International Monetary Fund, said Thursday that climate change will drive job creation.

My god... They're actually arguing for Global Warming.

Deviant, I fail to see how that's a point in favor of your argument. Broken immigration laws are broken immigration laws regardless, and need to be fixed without the idiotic argument of assimilation. People generally plan to assimilate anyway when they move somewhere permanently.

I'm not arguing against immigration reform.

I'm arguing against:

Back to the immigration issue, the way to remove illegal immigration is surprisingly similar to the way to end illegal drug use: make immigration legal. Remove the immigration quotas, open the damn border, and let anyone who wants come up unless they've been expressly deported. - Ramidel

This is the comment my "That would be horrible for assimilation effort." remark was aimed at.

I see this as going to far.

Ann Coulter was a nutjob before the Tea Party was an issue. She's been around for a while.

@Deviant; but they've got a point. And you've failed to illustrate how that would be terrible for assimilation. If those people are moving here permanently we're going to get parts of their culture regardless, like we did all those Germans and Italians etc, and they and their children are going to end up learning English and abiding by American laws. Or deal with the consequences of not doing so.

I agree. But she and Palin both cater to the sort of crowd the tea party attracts.

The sorts who really do view even slight deviations from ultraconservativeness evil.

How much of an immigration system was there back when the Irish and such came over? *goes to chck*

According to The Other Wiki, the US had no restrictions on immigration (different from citizenship) until 1875.

Edit: Until 1903 the limits were only on Asians and convicts. Hell even that only added "anarchists, people with epilepsy, beggars, and importers of prostitutes." to the banned list. It wasn't until 1917 that the US imposed reeding tests and further expanded the list of banned people. Quotas weren't added till 1921.

Regarding the climate change thing: I think it would cause job creation, in the middle of the States. When the biggest cities in the US are on the coast, climate change would turn out really badly. There are a very few first world countries that wouldn't be hugely adversely affected, and the US is near the top of the list.

Y'know, a lot of things produce job creation, employment, and economic growth effects. Not all of them are good. I think one such example is the "broken window fallacy", where you have a temporary boost to economic activity and employment created by a disaster. Furthermore, even if we're talking permanent employment, gross jobs growth is different from net jobs growth which is different from job losses. And it's job losses that are what hurts individuals and families and social stability.
