The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

This is fucking disgraceful.

The Republicans can talk all they want about "women's health", but de facto SB 5 is a statewide ban on abortion. The ridiculous standards that it imposes on abortion clinics is expected to force all but a handful of clinics to shut down, and in a state that is almost 270,000 square miles in area with 26 million residents, that's a big fucking deal.

That's the contents of the bill.

The vote was held after the midnight deadline. The bote itself was 17-12, which means it'll pass if it was determined to be a legal vote

I can only wonder what that's actually supposed to achieve.

Enkufka, did you mean today? Because that sort of statement sort of begs for confirmation.

At this point I think it would be okay if Texas seceded

The state senate website shows a vote on the bill on June 25, before midnight.

The page was edited. It originally said the vote was passed on June 26, 2011. Good ole Texas!

Thorn, please don't descend into the secessionist bullshit. I'm seriously tired of it coming from anyone, since it's neither a solution nor actually something anyone could legally do. Or something that the politicians in charge would want to do in large enough numbers to actually happen.

The republicans tried to count votes that weren't even cast. [1]

This doesn't surprise me because it's Republicans, but because it's politicians. Damn politicians.

Oh, that firebombing WAS last year. My mistake.

Rumor is right now that the Livestream showed for sure that the bill was dead.

Is the bill dead or is it not dead?

Richard Clarke, the guy who learned of the Al Qaeda attack before 9/11, revealed some disturbing news.

He said that US intelligence agencies can hack all of our cars.

How the fuck does that even work? My car doesn't have an internet connection, so unless they're trying to literally break into it I'm having trouble imagining that. That's the sort of extreme statement that requires more information, Sledgesaul, and I really shouldn't have to point that out.

@L-Mage: It appears to be dead for the moment. Also it turns out eighty fucking percent of Texans were against this fucking thing.

[up][up] Can doesn't mean are — anyway, for a lot of the older ones they'd need access to them — if they can be hackednote .

Although I will add, equipment for hacking into a car's ECU can be brought commercially — why do you think there are so many options for re-mapping car ECUs?
