The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Not an answer. I will rephrase question.

How long should a president rule if there are no term limits?

Until people vote him out.

idk why that's so hard to fathom.

If there aren't term limits, then the president would be in office as long as the people elected them. So, as long as the people wanted him there. In theory anyway.

So, in that case, we can vote a president out after one month?

Thank you Enkufka.

No, we have the option to vote the incumbent president out every presidential election.

A Democratic lawmaker from Minnesota criticized Tuesday’s Supreme Court decision on the Voting Rights Act by calling Justice Clarence Thomas “Uncle Thomas,” then saying he didn’t know “Uncle Tom” was a racist epithet.

Well that's just a fail, plain and simple.

Of course he knew what it meant.

As much as I don't like the guy, Thomas is the target of a lot of racism.

I'm not checking it out, but it's from the filibuster of the abortion restriction bill?

It is. Latest is that Davis mentioned "sonograms" again so the Republicans issued strike 3 for it being off topic, now they're debating if it counted.

Theoretically, there's nothing wrong with the Supreme Court's decision. All they're saying is that, if you're going to apply special restrictions to states, it has to be based on information that isn't 40 years out of date. All this decision should mean is that Congress will have to update its list of states under extra voter law scrutiny based on more recent data.

However, that depends on Congress being able to pass new legislation that's likely to upset the angry old bigot voting bloc, and the odds of that don't look too promising.

Okay, I started watching the Texas Legislature livestream late, and I have no idea what's going on now. Did this count as a successful filibuster because it took them till after midnight to vote on the filibuster or the abortion thing? (I am really confused right now.)

They're trying to decide whether the vote took place before or after midnight. If after, then it's an illegitimate vote since the session ends at midnight. Dems say yes, Repubs say no.

Being a blue state transplant in Dallas right now, I'm really hoping that the Republicans don't get away with being squirrelly fuckers over this.

Well, it seems like it was really close, so no doubt the Republicans will try to fudge it. I mean, I don't know if the clock in Austin is ten minutes ahead of the one I'm using or what, but it took them forever to get the crowd to stop and I don't know if that slowed things down or not.

Also hey, you live near me!

They passed the bill 17-12 after midnight, which means they passed it illegally.

So can they fudge it and pass it anyway? I mean, Republicans pretty much control the state as is. Is this going to end up going federal or something?

[up]Yeah, cuz it's the end of a session or something and Davis was trying to filibuster till the deadline.

Okay, the Republicanx voted on the bill, but now, there's a debate over whether or not the vote is legit.

There's a debate going on over whether or not the vote will hold up to legal scrutiny.
