The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

That's not likely to happen. What is more likely is that the Democrats will continue to absorb disaffected Republicans until the party becomes both dominant in the polls and too broad to establish a coherent platform. Once the GOP is gone for all intents and purposes, the Dems will schism into center-left and center-right parties.

Remember that in the U.S., elections are "first past the post", winner take all. There's no possibility in that system for a viable third party. A major party will only schism if their rivals are completely defeated.

The Texas House of Representatives gave approval to a bill contain sweeping restrictions to abortion, including a 20 week plus ban.

The bill has not been passed yet, and it would still need to go through the Senate, where Democrats have noted they may filibuster the bill.

Which Senate are you talking about?

Thought it was clear it was the Texas Senate.

I'm aware.

I'm also a cynical latino who is pretty sure the average republican cant tell the difference between a cuban, a mexican, a spaniard, or a brazillian anyhow, and that most of the anti-immigration nutcase brigade assumes not only are they all flavors of mexican, but that we're all baby eating job stealers who are lazy and drink cerveza all day,

I'm not okay with either of the first two.

The first forces schools into a fuckload more red tape that will cost them money that will be passed down to students.

The second is utter bullshiut.

The justification is that Scalia and crew dont give two shits about anything but helping businesses shit all over our rights in the name of conservativism.

[up][up] The court majority said the federal Food and Drug Administration had approved this drug for sale, and that federal approval trumps a state’s consumer-protection laws..

This is why State Rights aren't necessarily a bad thing.

Well, the generic drug manufacturers will have to deal with much stricter regulations on the drugs everywhere else if they want to sell them outside the states. You'll also have the Canadian manufacturers moving in because they show up everywhere they have an advantage.

It looks like it was because the FDA said the name-brand was safe, and it had all appropriate warning labels.

Basically, they're saying "Well, we knew you might have a severe reaction, and the package said so, so it's your fault for taking it".

I know that the Court decisions are big news, but I've been thinking about something for a while now:

Does anyone else feel like we are in a Cold War situation right now? It is not as clear-cut as the earlier one, but all the political, economic, and 3rd-country military fighting (Syria especially) just reminds me of that time.

There are basically 5 different parties muddying the waters: the US, Russia, the EU, China, and the Middle East are all bickering with each other (and with themselves) about... well, I can't think of anything any of them aren't in conflict (and not just negotiations) about when taken as a whole.

The Cold War was characterized by the threat of mutually assured destruction. There is no plausible way that can happen today, so it's missing a crucial component. Today's geopolitical situation bears little resemblance to that (thankfully gone) era.

Because theres absolutely no chance at all that hispanic and black students have lower scores because they tend to live in districts where education is subpar. Thats just crazy.

I'm probably unique in disagreeing with the SORNA ruling; in my opinion, it's a clear example of an ex post facto law.

I also agree with the SC's call on ethanol, but that's because ethanol policy is not the Court's job.
