Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Senator Chuck Schumer Accuses Putin Of Helping Snowden: Seems ‘Eager To Put A Finger’ In Eye Of U.S.
Senator Whitehouse (D-RI): Obama climate rules a ‘game-changer’ for carbon tax proposal

Putin is Ex-KGB, right? He'd probably hate to have American Intelligence have any trouble whatsoever.
I do have to wonder what level of "in your face"-ness climate change will have to present for Republicans to stop ignoring it.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"![]()
When we're past the point of no return and people are dying en masse they might believe it. Unfortunately it's also equally likely that they'll blame government weather machines.
edit: Why do I feel like they're intentionally ignoring all advice?

Here is a diagram about what Sledge is talking about.

And actually Miami won't be completely underwater by century's end. It would take about a 20 foot rise in sea levels to completely submerge Miami, but that isn't the point, it's gonna make hurricane storm surges even worse.

"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."Well, anyone who thinks that the GOP's platform is mired in anything vaguely related to reality should hopefully, finally, be getting over that notion.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"We need to get politicians to start getting people against concepts such as climate change and poverty again so we can stop getting at each others throats.
It's going to be difficult though, since humans have been at each others throats for forever.
"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."It's clear to me from conversations I've had with people, here and elsewhere, that the GOP's primary voter base is engaged in a feedback loop of self-destruction. Their media empire has spent so much time fomenting reactionary attitudes that GOP politicians can no longer get elected without pandering to those attitudes, which reinforces them in a kind of death spiral.
Given that the Democrats have shown little sign of rising above this, partly because they are also stuck with the need to be the party of broad appeal and thus become paralyzed by diversity of opinion, I think that our only savior will come from demographics, as the rabid Tea Party style Republicans become irrelevant through sheer numbers.
The question is whether that will happen in time to do something about our coastal cities flooding and our crops being ruined.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"
x6 Why do the Republicans do this? "We don't need to change our platform, just the way we present it!"
You are aware that when not told what party certain policies belong to, people favor the Democratic policies, right?
"Stop compromising." When did you start?
I seriously don't understand why the really crazy Republicans refuse to acknowledge climate change. Argue and obfuscate the reasons all you want, but deal with the results. It's really hard to have corporate dominance when most of the major cities are flooding.

I hate to play scapegoat politics, but it really comes down to the media here. They play to sensationalism and the appearance of "respecting all sides of an argument" — i.e., the Cult of Centrism. Taking sides, even when one side is clearly right, is apparently too much for them to handle.
Then you get Fox News, which makes no pretense of being anything other than a feedback mechanism for conservative pandering, and you have a recipe for politicians being terrified of taking a stand on these issues.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Republicans, yes. Democrats? What mechanism are you imagining for that to happen?
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"You mentioned this:
Basically, the Democrats get sucked into the Republicans' Death Spiral as well, leading to the demise of both parties.
Keep Rolling On

Well, considering climate change is a bit of a hot-button political/policy issue, I think so. Also, Obama's making a big speech about it tomorrow.
