Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Is Coulter really opposed to immigration reform (and amnesty in general, I suppose) because having "30 million voters who will never vote for a Republican?" Is she really that petty? Well, I know it's Ann Coulter we're talking about here, but it still seems like she's only opposed to it because she thinks it might hurt the GOP's chances in elections.
It's not just that they will never vote Republican. It's that most will vote Democrat
And 30 million new Democrats is a GOP nightmare.

As well as being completely ridiculous. Not all of these 30 million will vote and not all of them who vote will do so for the Democrats.

Of course it's not ridiculous. After all, all Hispanics are lazy parasites and only lazy parasites vote Democrat.

Trump delenda estIts even more telling that she treats Rubio, a member of her own party, as an enemy who needs to be shut up simply because he's Latino.
or that rand paul even suggests lynchings were only wrong because they didnt follow duie process, and therefore, implies that black people deserved to be put in their place by law.

I... just don't know what to say anymore. I didn't mind the idea behind the Tea Party. I thought that focusing on "fiscally responsible" government was a good idea even if they went about it the wrong way/with the wrong ideas.
Now that the talk has turned to to security, foreign polices, and immigration, these people who I thought were Well Intentioned Extremists (the trope that comes to mind even if it isn't a perfect fit) are showing that they are just insane.
You want to kick out/imprison the people who are here illegally? Ok. Now, tell me what that entails for all the stakeholders in this process. In other words: the security people who have to find, capture, and force out (or guard in prison) these "illegals"; the American Citizens who's lives are interfered with in the process of capturing these illegals; the American Citizens who don't know that their friend is illegally here and thus suddenly looses their friend—especially school children. On the economic side: who is paying these security people; the business owners who no longer have employees; the companies that loose customers.
I'm sure I'm missing something, but the point is WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU GET WHAT YOU ARE ASKING FOR?
~deep breath~ Sorry, it is just frustrating to see people in power advocate for such stupid ideas.
Of course, the Democrats getting exactly what they are asking for is probably not a good idea ether, but it would not ruin so many people's lives like this.

This is depressing... And there is quite literally nothing that can be done short of hoping that one of the Conservative justices grows a conscience.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Rick Perry signed a bill that regulates drone surveillance in Texas. The bill passed 119-11 in the state house and 29-1 in the state senate.
Rick Scott did the same in Florida, if you can believe that. Perry signed another bill that protects against unwarranted searches and seizures.
I have to note, however, that both governors signed drone bills that allow for exceptions to the rule, both of which boil down to "I oppose this action, but I'm gonna add a loophole that allows for said action to court anyway."
Wrong, actually. We still have the right to remain silent, but only after our Miranda right's have been read or we've announced our fifth amendment right.
It's still bad for a lot of folks who may not know or remember that specific right.
