The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Howard Dean came in 3rd in the 2004 Democratic Primary, right?

If he faces weak opponents he might have a shot, but I wouldn't put money on it.

In all faitrness, he's about as in line with catholic views of anything as a protestant anyhow.

The idiot didnt even know Ayn Rand hated christians till it was pointed out to him

I'm pretty sure he knew quite well and just didn't give a damn until he suddenly had to appease people outside Wisconsin 1st District who called him out on it.

And yeah, the Vatican publicly blasted his economic policy more than once. They were really pissed that he said it was inspired by his Catholicism of all things.

Of course they do, they are a British Newspaper. any British person could tell you the Guardian's as dishonest as the rest of our press.

But they also have actual documentary evidence of concerning civil liberties violations. That should be the issue.

Dean would only have a chance if he had someone like Joe Manchin or one of the big-wig Virginia politicians as running-mate. (Like Mark Warner or Terry Mc Auiffle or Tim Kaine)

That is horrible. Utterly and completely horrible. The hazing itself is bad enough, but the reaction the town had to it, oh my goodness. If the victim had been a girl, the reaction would probably have been rather different, but the parents, why did they see nothing wrong with this?

The assaulters should have been expelled. That is a horrible thing to do and it is completely unacceptable with absolutely no exceptions.

if it had been a girl they proibably woulda defended the athletes anyhow.

Athletes are sacred in these sort of towns, and your rights go out thre window the second you suggest masculine posturing over sport events isnt the single most awesome thing ever or dont go along with stupid excuses of "boys will be boys"

Actually, it would have been roughly the same. Only instead of the implication being called a fag she would be called a slut

I find the "boys will be boys" excuse is actually really insulting to the boys. "Oh, they act like horrible people and do things that would get them arrested when they're older...but, they're too dumb to figure it out and we won't bother teaching them it because it's a lost cause. You know, boys will be boys."

@Midget: That's mostly because high school athletics are what get most of the money for the school. If you expel your star players (or even the not so good players) and you're taking a large cut in needed revenue. It's really a terrible position to be in.

This is what happens when you train people to hate Muslims for twelve years.

A plot to design a radiation weapon that could fit in a small van and be used to silently kill humans was unraveled by an FBI task force that charged two men — a General Electric Co. industrial mechanic from Saratoga County and a computer software expert from Columbia County -— with conspiring to sell the weapon to Jewish groups or a southern branch of the Ku Klux Klan.

A federal complaint unsealed Wednesday in Albany said the vehicle-mounted radiation gear was intended to be remotely controlled and capable of aiming a high-energy lethal beam of radioactivity at human targets. The concept was that victims would mysteriously die from radiation poisoning within days.

[...]

Crawford is listed on several websites as a member of Americans Demanding Liberty and Freedom, a Galway-based tea party group.

Two months ago, in a five-part text message monitored by the FBI, Crawford discussed a battery power-supply for the weapon in messages laced with political anger. The text messages were sent on April 15, the day of the Boston Marathon bombing.

"Well, tell it to your treasoness bedwetting maggot in chief," Crawford wrote, apparently referring to President Barack Obama, according to a transcript in the complaint. "He started bringing the scumbags (here) wholesale as he got in charge. He directed the ins (a former U.S. immigration agency) to start bringing the muzzies here without background checks."

[...]

"Crawford also told the (source) that the target of his radiation emitting device would be the Muslim community," the complaint states. "Crawford described the device's capabilities as 'Hiroshima on a light switch' and that 'everything with respiration would be dead by the morning.'"

Crawford ended the meeting by stating "how much sweeter could there be than a big stack of smelly bodies?"

Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.

Yes, because the perpetrators have no personal responsibility for their actions, having been "trained to hate Muslims". Let's try to keep the hyperbole in check, please.

It's a yin-yang sort of thing. They are kind of nuts to begin with, but they wouldn't be so inflamed if the politicians they look to for leadership weren't sending them signals that it's okay to hate.

Yup. Dean's policies make way too much sense; thus, they're a socialist threat.
