The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Because businesses collapse from the bottom up. Those people at the top scooping in all those short-term profits are usually parachuting out by the time their financial issues hit that high.

Then you just have all the bankruptcy stuck to the business itself (which is a person LOL) as everyone at the bottom gets laid off, while the people who drove it there run off with all its dying earnings.

[up] Because cop dramas represent reality? Even though I'm undecided on the issue at hand that still sounds like a stupid comparison.

One thing we might reasonably change, even with current politics, is getting rid of "golden parachutes". Or at least make it so that the people who make bad long-term decisions are effected by those decisions.

Doesn't solve the investor issue (most still want their return ASAP), but might make the people at the top are more responsible.

I think golden parachutes are giving CEO's an incentive to fail, or making it look acceptable.

That completely goes against everything I know about human behavior. You aren't supposed to be given positive incentives to perform negative behavior. You punish negative behavior such as failure, not reward it.

In total grumpycat fashion, my only response to this is "Good."

This debit card shit a lot of companies are doing is a total racket, I hope this sets a legal precedent and they quit thinking about doing this.

It seems one of the problems is whether the government should be allowed to collect information it's not necessarily allowed to see.

Basically, does the legal protection apply to collection of information or apply to processing of that information?

Karl Rove Says NSA Less Intrusive Than Local Cops: ‘Can’t Turn On A Cop Drama’ Without Seeing A Phone Traced

You also can't turn on a cop drama without seeing them enhance a grainy CCTV image to absurd enough resolution to get a clear picture of the crime scene out of the reflection off a dude's fucking cornea...

[up][up]Maybe the principle of non-retroactivity of laws could be used against that. Because it makes the wiretapping warrant retroactive.

@Medinoc: As I understand it, non-retroactivity is one-way. It means you can't charge someone for violating a law that didn't exist when they committed the act, but it doesn't necessarily prevent something from being retroactively declassified as a violation.

I know, but one could argue that a wiretapping warrant on someone would count as "making more restrictive", rather than the reverse. And by allowing access to data seized before the warrant, it's retroactive.

Granted, that would be quite a long shot.

This article has some impractical ideas, but it gives a good glance into the election process.

What stance did Scalia have there? It sounds like two different ones.

He ultimately decided against the law, though he appears to have been sympathetic in the middle of the trial.

Either, A, he was trying to vote party-line but had a random attack of honesty when it came time to vote, or B, he was making a decision based on his own internal logic. B is more likely; Scalia has a tendency to consider odd facts and combine them in odd ways.

Hmm, impressive. I see SCOTUS handing down rational decisions and I want to pinch myself.

What the hell? Just when I thought the justices were showing signs of being reasonable, they have to go and weaken the Fifth Amendment.

Yeah, that makes sense. Rights don't exist until you explicitly invoke them.
