The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Wait really? Hamilton proposed that? Wow we would be a lot worse if it were like that

Yep! Hamilton was all sorts of authoritarian.

I have not been able (well, "willing to spend the time" at least) to 100% keep up with the thread for the last few days. Anything in particular on the last 9 pages I should read?
Bof... There's been another shooting that sparked more gun control debate, a talk on how the GOP should ditch the Religious Right, Max reaffirming his support for a woman's body and reproductive organs being used without her consent for months at a time, and a few links to news on the NSA scandal.

Little new, in fact.

Okay, so I know a lawsuit against the government is matter of principle, but do you think it'll actually send a message that Americans aren't quite just going to get used to be watched?

Why would he know? If he's off the Agency why would he still know what they were on about. It seems unlikely, both the idea that it is Chinese espionage and that the government is really considering it.

Because the CIA is(to their displeasure) turning into a revolving door organization. People join the CIA, get experience, and then leave and join contracted intelligence firms that do the same thing. He could very well be an employee of an intelligence company working for the US, and thus still very much in the game.

Max reaffirming his support for a woman's body and reproductive organs being used without her consent for months at a time, an innocent human's life's a collection of cells without the ability to store or process information or even survive without the functions of said woman basic right to exist and not be ended against its will despite not having a will at all under some nebulous trendy concept of feminism even though half of all zygotes fail to implant anyway but apparently ending it after it has is murder, and he'll just label "feminism" as "trendy" because a movement which has been going for 50 years is obviously not sticking around so he'll just quietly sweep all of that under the rug, and then say that that's the only reason why women have abortions because women only have abortions to keep themselves free from a process which can in fact debilitate them and leave them with massive hormonal changes that might leave them with depression and ignore the fact that most women have abortions because they cannot afford financially to have yet another child.

Maxima, all rudery aside, please read the article I linked to if you honestly want to learn about why someone would stop supporting the Pro-Life movement and start supporting the Pro-Choice movement.

This will be the last time I post about abortion.

It was Midget who mentioned Australia banning guns and having their gun violence rate plummet.

Which isn't really true. Australia already had very low rates of gun homicide even before the ban, and it seems to have had little to no effect in the long term. Depending on the source, there's actually some indication that gun violence increased very briefly after each successive ban before falling back to normal (already falling) levels.

@Jovian: Some of us feel Bradley Manning didn't do anything wrong either.

@Barkey:

Here's the problem with regulating storage of guns in the home though, how do you enforce that? Obviously if tragedy has already struck, of course that person should be denied a permit. But how do you enforce that? Do you have cops/atf folks visit your house to make sure you have a safe? Do you take a picture of your gun safe and show you have one? You can make people prove they own the devices necessary to secure firearms such as safes and cable locks, but you can't prove or make people prove that they are actually using them. Manpower wise, it isn't realistic. And from a legal standpoint, it wouldn't be ok to be forced to invite LEO's into your home on a whim so they can make sure your guns are stored correctly.
Yeah, I have no idea how to enforce it except for after the fact. Remove permit, close gun show loophole, provide local firearms dealers with the guy's picture and the message "we had to bury a six-year-old because this dumbass didn't follow basic procedures".

Yeah, that's cleaner.

Regarding state secession:

Several Colorado counties that strongly oppose increased regulation of the oil and gas industry say they want to form their own state.

"The whole purpose of doing this is to preserve an agricultural way of life and to protect the energy sector, that we feel is very much under assault," Conway said.

HMMMM...'protect an energy sector under assault', you say? Surely this is a true grassroots movement of concerned citizens without any funding from corporations whatsoever!

Yeah? Well, when you get a security clearance, one of the things you do is agree not to allow classified information into the hands of people without a security clearance. You can't up and change your mind and un-agree to that after the fact. Both Manning and Snowden are idiots who deserve whatever sentence they're inevitably going to end up with.
