The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

America talks a big game about freedom. But somehow, somebody always gets left out. I'm just interested in protecting the people who are getting left out.

They are the slaves of their corporoate overlords; masters named Citibank, and BP, and Northrup Grumman, and HSBC, and Sony, et al.

...and how many of those companies are American, I wonder? How many of those companies are listed in London or Tokyo or Frankfurt or in China instead of New York?

No offense, but that you somehow consider locking the border down tight anywhere near as big a concern as drones or surveillance pisses off a mexican-american like me to no end :P

As a Southern Californian, this issue is important to me.

yeah, and to me, It reads as a witch hunt given my personal feelings on it is that for every person legitimately worried about gang violence or cartels, you have 9 more who just hate latinos and want us all to be deported/killed.

As I said, more hard-working citizens to add to the country, pay taxes, and make and buy our goods is a wonderful thing.

I think you might be overestimating the Latino hate somewhat.

I think you severely underestimate how half the immigration laws passed come off to a son of an immigrant :P

My opinion is that the route to fixing this issue is to find a way to fix Mexico. Instead of treating the symptom(illegal immigration), we should be fixing the problem(violence and instability in Mexico).

I just can't find it in me to give a free pass to people who unabashedly support something with the word "Illegal" in it. I've had to go out and provide security during the May-Day protests before, and see signs that say "Being illegal is not a crime." Yes it is motherfucker, that's why it says illegal! I sympathize with why Mexicans are leaving, but maybe they can have some motherfucking pride and take their country back from the Cartels, the way several towns are doing right now with their militia uprisings.

And on a more personal level, I can't help but feel a bit defensive and angry when half the signs on businesses in my town are starting to be in spanish and not in english. It's starting to feel like an invasion.

I am the grandson of an illegal immigrant. And the great, great, great, great grandson of slaves.

Nevertheless, as Barkey says, we can't jeopardize the safety of the whole because "illegal immigrant" wounds feelings.

It's funny how in the US, it's not the immigrants who are expected to learn English.

Is it somehow better for US politicians to be slaves to American-owned corporations?

I don't see why it is a big deal to have Spanish signs out front. If you want to shop somewhere else than do it.

[up][up]Pretty much every job offer I've ever seen has the requirement "must be able to read, write, and speak in English."

[down]Pretty much.

Hmmm, kindasorta how a lot of other countries are forced to put up signs in English too, huh?

The sad thing is immigrant hate isn't even a new issue. Hell, in the 19th century you had political parties based around it. If we can't resolve that issue after so long...no wonder LGBT rights progress so slowly.

It's a big deal in that it implies that it's perfectly okay to not only illegally enter a country and show complete disregard for its laws, but you now have no obligation to learn how to acclimate to your new home.

The old saying was "When in Rome, do as the Romans." Now it seems to be "When it Rome, the Romans should have to cater to you."

Other countries have plenty of English signs and even towns full of Americans staying or living. Plus it's not exactly catering to them when you have people constantly telling them to learn English or they can't get a job.

Can I just say that I'm really fucking tired of the one-two punch of hyperbole and cynicism?

On one hand, everything that happens is the end of the world. If you cry "the sky is falling" at every fucking thing that happens, then people are going to tune you out sooner or later. Over the last few months, we've ricocheted from one thing to another, each time screaming at the top of our lungs that it's the biggest threat to Truth, Justice, and the American Way since taxation without representation. You know what? It's not. Grow some calluses and learn to take things in stride, because venting your spleen every time something political happens that you don't like is reducing the signal-to-noise ratio in political discourse to near zero.

On the other hand, people act like all the shit that happens should just be expected because all politicians are by definition scumbags who only made it into office through more effective use of corruption than their opponents. You know what? Politicians are people. Some of them are nice guys, some of them are assholes, some of them are truly dedicated to their cause, some of them are only in it for themselves, some of them are willing and able to make things happen, and some of them are idiots flailing blindly at the system. But you know what? Every time you say "what do you expect, all politicians are bastards" you make it a little more true. If you don't want politicians to be bastards, don't vote bastards into office. If you hold them accountable for themselves, then they'll either shape up or ship out. If politicians being bastards is considered normal — or worse, inevitable — then eventually it will become acceptable as well (if it hasn't already). So if you want politicians to be better people, then HOLD THEM TO A HIGHER STANDARD. Don't shrug and say "eh, politicians, whaddayagonnado?" because that's the exact opposite of fixing the problem.

What I'm trying to say is slow down.
