The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Is there an equivalent term for an old man you find abrasive?

Funnily enough, "old man" itself can be considered to be abrasive too...

Fuddy-duddy, geezer, mossback,

A lot of the technically gender-neutral don't see much application on females; feeble, old fool, dotard, infirm, fossil, geriatric, old fart...

Apparently, male senility is associated with impotence, dim-wittedness, and passivity, while female senility is associated with a sour, bitter, temperamental character.

Well, back on topic, I don't like Clinton cause I find her hawkish and entitled.

I'm disappointed we don't call old man "Warlocks" as a derogatory term.

Well, we didn't have warlock trials or warlock hunts.

I wonder why that is...

Eh, originally the term witch covered any magic user. Lots of men were targeted whenever a witchhunt came around.

Warlock is actually more along the lines of 'oathbreaker' in meaning. It's really Crowley that associated it with magic long after the witch hunts. But we're getting quite far off topic.

Shocker. China hacked us again. Quick! Send Obama to say he's sorry his computers were so unsecured.

Are we REALLY going to just let China do whatever it wants? With all the hacking, supporting oppressive and horrible governments, helping Iran AND North Korea, unfair trading practices, sending us deadly (but cheap...) toys and stuff, having the worst human rights record out of the entire UN Security Council... Where do we tell them to stop? It's getting absurd.

Geriatric fuck, a la stepbrothers? That's one I actually use in common parlance. "Fucking bag of bones" sounds like one I would say.

Powell will be slaughtered by his Iraq War statement, especially WMD and yellow cake. He will be seen as bowing to Bush political pressure and lying about Iraq WMD.

But at the same time, he can be exonerated by the fact that him not liking the situation is why he resigned and left.

They dont.

The majority of the US debt the government owes itself.

The reason nobody second-guesses china is because a lot of US companies make half their products in China because labor can be abused as mucvh as manufacturers want

If we default on our debt to China, China's economy collapses. Nothing happens to us at all, at least immediately. There would be cascading effects, of course.

There is no electoral demographic lining up to protect your constitutional rights. Not in Washington and not in the local primaries. We're not going to win that battle in politics anytime soon; I'm looking to encryption tech that is too convenient and ubiquitous to make illegal, and maybe shadow networks.

Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.

The way to win that battle politically is to get people to give a shit politically.

It's really well and good that people will throw a fuss to get gay marriage legalized and for the right for a man to use a women's bathroom if a doctor says the guys really really feels like a woman and for the right to exercise your feminist rights to end an innocent human life.

But let's start caring that the government still allows corporations to rob the people, and not pay their share. Let's start giving a shit that our Bill of Rights is becoming worth less than toilet paper. Let's give a shit that the only options for dealing with illegal immigrants is either lock them all up or just let them disregard the law; and neither of those are good options.

If we don't start giving a shit about what matters, all we'll have left...is shit.

The point isn't to sit and wait your turn. The point is, we can't be so beholden to our pet causes that as soon as somebody says "gay rights yay!" we ignore that their install cameras in our goddamn bathrooms.

Edited because post responded to was edited. Basically, I do care about other issues, but I don't care much for being told issues important to me aren't enough of a priority. I hear that. A lot.

It isn't a choice between Republicans oppressing gays and Democrats spying on everyone. Republicans would do both.
