There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Considering how little actual gulf coast Alabama has it makes sense that they are taking this less seriously than say Louisiana or Texas.

That's not to say that Governor Bentley's actions aren't repugnant.

From the Bachmann one.

"I may run for another public office"

What do people think? Governor, Senate, or maybe take the VP slot on a super Tea Part ticket in 2016?

If she was to conservative for Minnesota's most conservative district then she is to conservative to be it's Senator or Governor.

She is probably gonna be a pundit like Sarah Palin, Allen West, and Herman Cain.

[up] I never said she'd win, just that she'd run for something. Probably just throw her had into the Republican primary when it comes around for 2016.

Also the word you're looking for is crazy, she's no conservative, not even by American standards.

I don't think they would let her run as a primary or VP in the 2016 election. Even the GOP knows it's absolute suicide.

A Powell/Christie ticket would be a bit smarter.

I say that because Powell has more leadership experience than Christie and is more educated, but Christie would make a great VP because his many gaffes involving calling people idiots would go more or less unpunished, because that's the type of shit VP's do. They're like rodeo clowns who come out when the main bullfighter is in a spot of trouble.

Not to say Christie is necessarily incompetent, I like that he's pretty brutally honest about most shit. I like his attitude, but I think he would be most effective as a VP.

Plus Powell is moderate, relatively not bought-out, and he'll get the conservative black vote(traditional and older black folks) as well as some of the younger ones. Plus he'll have the deal sealed on the military vote by default. If they got those two "RINO's" to run for 2016, I think they would have a really good chance of a win. Mostly because I can't really think of any major contenders for a Democratic 2016 run, especially with Petraeus reputation tarred and feathered. Hillary ain't gonna win, that's for sure.

Has Powell even done anything since Bush left office? I haven't heard much and I sort of thought he'd retired.

Also, why wouldn't Hillary win? Lots of Democrats seem to want her to run even though she actually is retired. Republicans would have to do a lot better the next time around than they did last year if they actually want to win.

Powell has been mostly quiet, which works in his favor in a lot of ways, not a whole lot of room for scandal. Plus the dude has a ton of integrity.

Well considering even as someone who isn't a raging conservative, I won't vote for her because of Benghazi. Not to mention how much spin they'll be able to put on that, and the fact that a rather large amount of people simply hate Hillary.

And not to derail into the Benghazi thing too much, but the reason being is that some shit fucked up pretty bad on her watch, and the administration tried to protect her. I don't like that, she was asleep at the wheel. She's also ridiculously anti-gun, which is the other reason I won't touch her with a 10 foot pole. Hell, she's so rabidly anti-gun, I'd almost be willing to publicly demonstrate with anti-hillary signs in the streets. If she makes President, we might as well kiss the second amendment goodbye.

Republicans might not be that happy with how things are going, but Hillary stepping up to the plate would galvanize a lot of people to vote who would vote against her.

In other words, I hate Hillary with a burning passion, and would go out of my way to devote my vote and free time to helping keep her from winning. Please, I wouldn't mind voting Democrat again, but get someone more moderate than that fucking witch.

Weren't Republicans the one trying to draft Petraus?

I'm 95% sure that the 2016 Democratic Presidential candidate is gonna be Biden, Hillary, or Cuomo.

EDIT: If Hilarry runs there is a very good chance the presidency is hers. Even after Bengahzi she is crushing everyone else in the polls.

A lot of speculation goes towards Petraeus being a Democrat, because he was on of the earlier supporters of getting rid of DADT, among other things.

And seriously, I'd consider leaving if Hillary was elected. I'd probably stick it out to the end of her term and see what happens, but I seriously think I'd end up moving to Canada because of some of the things she would do. They pay their military really well for one.

Plus, her husband is one of the most hated presidents by the military, because the entire military got slashed, gutted, and burned under him. We don't want a repeat of people being kicked out before their 20 for no particular reason.

Barkey, that's possibility one, the GOP going sane and reasonable, but they don't appear to be learning the lessons of 2012, so I think it's unlikely. The other possibility is that the GOP continue down the track they are on, so far we've had two Tea Party VP slots, unless someone at Republican HQ wakes up it's possible we'll get a Tea Party darling in the top slot for the Republicans in 2016

^^

Because the executive branch has a pretty good deal of influence at all levels regardless. It's all about favors, and the executive branch can scratch backs just like anyone else can.

That and it means for me I disagree with Hillary on an extremely important issue to me, which is kind of the reason most people don't vote for Presidents in the first place. "They don't represent me" ya know?

^

That'll probably mean an instant loss unless someone sane pops up out of nowhere as a candidate.

I'd really like a sane Libertarian candidate.

Considering you referred to her as "fucking witch" I don't have much respect for your opinion in that regard.

Also the Benghazi thing wasn't that much of a scandal: Several people died in similar incidents during Bush's administration and the Republicans didn't make a fuss. Also, Republicans were the ones that voted to DEFUND embassy security and the like. It's a manufactured scandal that they keep dragging out to distract from their own bullshit. I don't think that she'd create that much outrage. Course, I don't think she's going to run anyway because she's retired and I think she prefers to stay that way.

Also, if presidents could affect the gun issue that much, we'd have already had gun control enacted. Congress clearly has more effective control over the issue, and the Republicans have choked all discussion on the matter.

Edit: Do we have to keep bringing up Palin like she's still relevant?

I don't like Clinton because she's been hawking going down on Iran and intervening in Cuba since 2008. Repeatedly, and with a Holier Than Thou, "we must do this For Great Justice" attitude. "Witch" is just the natural thing to call an old woman whom you find abrasive (apparently, no one calls "witch", say, a Femme Fatale or The Vamp, anymore), in our culture. There was also "crone", "hag","harpy", "fury"... We detractors could call her The Kindly One, if you like.

They're gendered, but I'm not sure they're sexist. Any second opinion?
