Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So do you guys think Christie will appoint himself?
Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016@STH - Dude, sometimes, in the words of Jor-El people mean to be good. They only lack the light to show the way.
That's my problem with America bashing. Americans make America great. Not our weapons, not our tech; our people. If WE give up on America, then the nation is done. And that would be tragic. Besides, if The Terminator could be governor, I'm sure you can.
It was an honor”Today we can declare: Government is not the problem, and government is not the solution. We—the American people—we are the solution.” - Bill Clinton
Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016It takes an extraordinary amount of willpower to help when people don't want to be helped but they need it. Especially if they make it harder for you to help yourself while doing that, it's admirable but I can't blame people for not having a sense of national pride when they feel like their nation has constantly screwed them, (or has as is the case with many) from building a life or being happy.
Wanting to help people is one of the world's most admirable traits, but at the end of the day you have to make sure your not going crazy or being hurt by it.
I want to make sure America reaches it's full potential to be a great nation, I want to make it so people of any sex, creed, orientation, race etc can be with any other consenting partner or partners if that is what they wish. I want a day to come where work even at a minimum wage job can afford you a decent place to live, I want to make it so a poor family never have to worry that someone is going to die because they can't afford surgery, I want to make sure people have enough money to live if they can't find a job or lost the ability to work.
I don't want to be a politician though.
I just want to have debates and hopefully vote for a better world, (even though I am aware my vote doesn't go very far). I wouldn't blame somebody for going to a place where that already is a reality though.
Wait why do the Republican Party leaders want to increase student loan interest? They know it actually is bad out there for new workers no matter their political party of choice right? How does them if what young people who still support them Default on their student loans and know their party tried to raise the rates?
Because poor kids need to suck up their lower quality educations and leave the top tier schools to the lazy scions of wealth.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I was under the impression it was "poor kids should work their way up through the corporate ladder instead of committing to college" conveniently forgetting how a whole lot more jobs that don't pay a lot require a bachelors degree now.
You know something tells me we might have a few more entrepreneurs in the future. If they aren't crowded out that is.
In fairness, most Republicans don't want to intentionally increase student loans. They want to tie student loan interest rates to prevailing market trends and end federal subsidies.
I say 'most' because you will always have people like this guy.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Either way it means students have to pay more money on their loans. That is a fucking terrible idea given the current state of the economy and the job market.
Heck, they could do a lot of good by fixing the repayment system. As I understand it I have to pay back my loan even if I can't get a job in my desired field. That's beyond stupid in my mind. I wouldn't be as hostile to a rate increase if they at least changed that part.

Well fuck. I throw up my hands. I'm moving to Oz.
But that's a story for another time.
