Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Well, in this case I don't know if we can blame it entirely on libertarianism. It's at least a little bit ignorance of how little power local governments have right now. (One mayor or whatever he was got quoted as saying he'd like to have the locals decide zoning laws rather than be flat out told they can't decide for themselves.) And ignorance of the fact that this is occurring, because I assumed that people were required everywhere to have fire safety laws. I was, however, ignorant of the connection between that and zoning laws.
It's a clusterfuck tied up in big business, and it really always has been from the start. Texas likes to tout its business regiment for a reason; chances are good at succeeding here. There is, however, a tremendous cost. *come on staaate, flip blue already* *get us some safety laws that are enforced*

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016An individual identified as “Bob from Maine” said, “I’m from Maine and our tea party will be meeting up next week. What is the best way that we can get our senator to listen to us?”
“Shoot her,” said another caller, who did not identify himself.
I'm not sure that would change her mind.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Well, aside of it being a Republican and Libertarian stronghold? Possibly a pre-emptive backlash against the growing Hispanic population?
Really though I don't think they're all that crazier than the rest of the Republican party. It's just our proportionally higher representation means we have more reps to say and do stupid things on a national and state level. Also the system is rigged so that Rick Perry keeps getting elected. There's been some rumbling that the presidential campaign and other things have ruined his chances in the next election, but I'm just going to wait and hope.
Everybody I know in Texas was trying to get Perry elected president so they could get him the hell out of their state. How exactly has he rigged the elections? I'm not doubting you, I'm honestly wondering.
Writing a post-post apocalypse LitRPG on RR. Also fanfic stuff.
Why would them trying to vote him up to so high a position speak against their inability to un-elect him?
To a certain degree, it would probably speak for it.
"The marvel is not that the Bear posts well, but that the Bear posts at all."I mean that previously the system was rigged so he pretty much couldn't lose. Even against another Republican. And since he's friendly towards businesses (so much so that at one point he and his administration handed Big Oil money that had been earmarked for the education funds) there ARE people that would want to vote him up, because he serves their interests.
I can't tell any more.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016A "bigger, more inclusive Republican Party" would go a long way to solving many of this nation's issues, I think. But I'm not sure Sen. Paul and I would agree on what constitutes "more inclusive." Minority members have to be equal to the wealthy white men Senator.
But that's a story for another time.Rand Paul? He's talking about Libertarians, I think, not moderates.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Ace Ventura is Jim Carrey character. Jesse Ventura is a former wrestler. He's also the host of show about conspiracy theories, most of which he appears to believe on the flimsiest of evidence. (Like this one show where he had a lady who believed the World Health Organization was trying to engineer a disease to kill off most of the world's population, and that they were out to kill her over the issue.)
In short, though the man is clearly a liberal minded fellow, he's fucking ridiculous and a nutcase. The only thing that makes him better than the right is that he's a decent enough fellow not to issue death threats to people he disagrees with. Which actually makes him a lot better really, but he's not qualified for political office these days. Certainly not the presidency.

He's even got a trope page: Jesse Ventura.

@Drunk: I don't know why you're saying that at me when we pretty much agree on that score? I don't recall us ever having voiced a good opinion of libertarianism.
